Turkey has formally reassured the European Union's executive it would grant access to asylum procedures to all asylum-seekers sent back from the bloc, an EU official said on Tuesday of a key outstanding element in a migration agreement with Ankara. The number of refugees and migrants reaching European shores in Greece from Turkey has dropped since late March, when a deal between Brussels and Ankara took effect and the bloc started deporting back people arriving through that route. Since first agreeing the migration deal with Turkey in March, Brussels has pushed Ankara to change that to allow the EU to scale up the returns without the risk of violating international humanitarian laws.
