National strike over pension reforms paralyses parts of Greece

[Demonstrators march during a 24-hour general strike against planned pension reforms in Athens]By Renee Maltezou and Lefteris Papadimas ATHENS (Reuters) - Parts of Greece came to a standstill on Thursday as thousands of people went on strike over pension reforms pursued by the leftist-led government to meet conditions set by international lenders to rescue the debt-crippled country. Testing the resolve of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as he clings to a slim majority in parliament, Greeks rallied around the country to demand he rescind a plan to tighten the social security system that many fear will push them deeper into poverty. "They should be strung up here, in Syntagma Square," said pensioner Nikos Ghinis as he walked along with thousands of others in central Athens.
