Former Greek Minister Mitsotakis Wins New Democracy Leadership

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a former Administrative Reform Minister, on Sunday narrowly won a vote determining the next leader of conservative New Democracy party. This comes after Samaras stepped down as New Democracy chair on July 05, following a resounding "No" in a referendum called by the government of Alexis Tsipras on new bailout conditions proposed then by international lenders. Evangelos Meimarakis was appointed as interim party head. On Sunday he lost to Mitsotakis gaining 49% of the vote. Mitsotakis served as Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance between 2013 and 2015, in the cabinet of PM Antonis Samaras who at the time was New Democracy's leader. English-language Kathimerini quotes him as saying after results were announced late on January 10 that his party would seek "to express all those forces that are opposedto the populism of an incompetent government", referring to Tsipras's second cabinet.
