Turkish prosecutors want 35-year jail terms for the alleged people-smugglers blamed for the death of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old boy whose washed-up body came to symbolize this summer’s refugee crisis. Two Syrians are accused of “causing death by deliberate negligence” and “migrant smuggling,” the state-run Anatolia news agency reported Thursday. The toddler died along with his mother and brother in September when the boat the family were travelling in sank on its way across the Aegean sea from Turkey to the Greek island of Kos. Aylan’s father survived and returned to the Syrian town of Kobane to bury his family. Prosecutors said that an investigation is underway to identify six other suspects, including four Turks. The prosecutors’ indictment was sent to the Bodrum criminal court and a hearing will be scheduled once the indictment has been approved.
