Sarkozy Calls for Migrant Detention Centers in Serbia, Bulgaria

North African states willing to cooperate or "countries like Serbia and Bulgaria" could help address the migrant crisis by setting up detention centers on their territories, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said. In his words, such a move might put an end to the "drama of crossing the Mediterranean", RTL quotes him as telling members and supporters of his conservative UMP party on Saturday. He has also called for a "Schengen II" agreement among member states of the borderless area but under the condition that all of the states have "the same migration policy". Sarkozy has made clear he doesn't believe in "a reform of Schengen... Schengen and Europe must be rebuilt." His comments come as Europe is facing its worst migrant crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people crossing its south and its southeast seeking to enter Germany and be granted refugee status there. Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia and Greece are now considered standard routes as migrants try to reach Hungary and then head to Austria, from where they can easily reach the German borders. Sarkozy has also warned of the need to distinguish between "refugees and labor migrants". Thousands of people across Europe call on countries like Hungary to open their borders to let migrants in, insisting everybody fleeing political persecution should be granted asylum.
