EU Interior Ministers countries will discuss the plan proposal according to which member states will need to distribute the 40,000 refugees coming from Italy and Greece. The decision will be made at the informal meeting in Luxembourg that is currently the Chair of the Council of Europe. Leaders across the EU have largely voted against the European Commission’s proposal for obligatory migrant quotas. As a result a decision was made for people arriving on boats across the Mediterranean and other refugees to be hosted voluntarily by other countries. The decision on which countries will be hosting the refugees is expected to be reached by the end of the month. Bulgaria insists on receiving a special statute on account of the increased refugee influx from the Turkey border. According to a statement made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the EU is set on assisting the Balkans and Hungary to deal with the increased refugee numbers, the Bulgarian National Radio reported. She added that Hungary and Serbia have been negatively affected by the current application system for obtaining a refugee statute that is not functioning. Merkel made the statement following her visit to Belgrade and added that Germany does not approve border fences as has been the case in Bulgaria and Hungary.
