EU to Propose Migrant Plan As 1,000 Migrants Arrive in Greece in One Day

As Europe is struggling to cope with a massive influx of over 100,000 migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea seeking a better life in the continent this year, the European Union (UN) took the initiative to propose its 28 nations’ interior ministers on Wednesday to work together for the relocation of around 40,000 refugees. European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud told reporters in Brussels about this urgent issue that will be extensively discussed in Luxembourg next Tuesday: “We need to act now and not in four months.” However, many of Europe’s interior ministers object to sharing this number of refugees because according to them it would be unfair to their countries taking into account that they have already made efforts to host migrants in the past. “We put an ambitious proposal on the table for a relocation mechanism. We knew it would not win any prizes but we do expect the ministers … to take their responsibility,” Bertaud said regarding the objection on a future migrant plan. The European decision came little after Greek authorities revealed on Wednesday that more than 1,000 illegal immigrants, mainly from Syria and Africa, had travelled to Greece by sea in just one day. Foreign minister of Italy Paolo Gentiloni, anxious about the fact that his country is the one along with Greece that are affected the most by the huge influx of refugees, expressed his concern that it will be a huge political failure for Europe if the EU migrant plan is not quickly endorsed.
