Syros is a magical island with a strong cultural and industrial past, and an urban aura that few places in Greece have. It is no wonder that the island hosts not one but many festivals from classical music to animation. The annual Syros International Film Festival has been scheduled to take place between July 3 and 12. Traditional spaces across the island will be used as screening areas in an attempt to highlight the island’s heritage while the program will include independent films, thematic screenings, workshops, lectures and exhibitions. This year the organization team opted to launch a research laboratory-residency for audiovisual arts, to be held at the Monastery of Ano Syros, as well as a drive-in cinema at Posidonia. The opening ceremony will include MAKI, a cinema-performance group from Grenoble, France, who have prepared a unique projection-performance using 16mm film. The festival’s first series of lectures and debates will be hosted at the Apollo theater and their aim is to map the transition from film to digital format. The list of speakers includes names such as film directors Peter Greenaway, Albert Serra and Eva Stefani. The festival will include a thematic program called “Where: Cinemas of Place,” with modern and classic films, both documentaries and fiction of Greek and foreign origin. A drive-in cinema will also be part of the festival, as well as the “One Off” program, a unique look at American filmmakers who have only completed one feature film.
