U.S. Watches Merkel-Tsipras Meeting with Great Interest

The White House tuned into Monday’s meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin with great interest. White House spokesperson Josh Earnest stated that “The U.S. continues to be in close contact with European allies and its partners for issues regarding economic insecurity in the continent.” When asked about the deadlock in negotiations between and its European partners, Earnest said that “We continue to be cautious of the matter. It is in the best interest of the United States and our economy for these differences to be resolved.” Commenting on the meeting between the Greek and German heads of state, Earnest said that the good news is that each of the EU Member States recognizes and has its own interest in trying to resolve this situation.” Earnest further answered questions regarding the dollar and euro fluctuations in global stock exchanges caused by the economic instability in Europe. He said that “There is a long tradition in the U.S. that only the Treasury Secretary can comment on the value of the U.S. currency. So I would say that the president and his economic team are regularly informed about the financial markets.”
