The Greek police cyber-crime unit faced an unprecedented case. For the first time they arrested a young man from Thessaloniki, northern Greece who was not only searching and distributing child pornography, he was also creating his own videos and photographs. Interpol came in contact with Greek authorities about a child pornography website with users across Europe, as well as Greece. The cyber-crime unit conducted an investigation and quickly located the Greek website users via their electronic traces. In a short period of time they were able to get an address in western Thessaloniki. Greek authorities rushed to the scene only to realize that the house owner had nothing to do with child pornography. In fact it was his 24-year-old neighbor who had intercepted his WIFI connection in order to avoid getting caught. Greek police officers broke into the 24-year-old man’s home and started their investigation, in the presence of a public prosecutor. What they found in his computer was appalling and even made the experienced cyber-crime unit police officers cringe. The accused had filmed himself molesting a 10-year-old boy, while he also had photographs of a 4-year-old girl in various indecent poses. Greek authorities believe that the man may be part of a larger child pornography ring operating in northern Greece.
