Greece’s Negotiation Plan: Bailout Extension; No Memorandum

Greece’s government is planning to request a six-month extension of the 240 billion-euro loan set to expire at the end of February, but without extending the current memorandum and its austerity measures previous Greek governments had signed as part of the deal. The leak was confirmed by Greek government sources on Tuesday night, two days after Eurogroup talks broke down as Greece rejected the suggested extension agreement as it was drafted by EU officials. “We could not accept an extension of the current programme as we believe that this is part of the problem,” had stated Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis after the last eurogroup that ended without a deal. Negotiations are continuing between Greece and its international lenders to clarify the conditions of a possible new agreement that would guarantee the country is able to deliver on its financial obligations to creditors . Greek media have reported that the Greek government intends to make the request on Wednesday with a new Eurogroup meeting to be possibly held on Friday.
