German newspaper Der Spiegel has published an extensive article on the political developments in Greece, noting that SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras may not be as irrational as everyone in Germany thinks. Reporter Jakob Augstein, son of Der Spiegel’s founder, published an article entitled “Is there a reason for Greece’s suffering?” criticizing the way German politicians and media reacted to the Greek snap elections. “’Who governs in a democracy? The people or the capital?’ Simple question, one might say. Because what distinguishes democracy from dictatorship is the election. The West is proud of it. Unless people intend to vote for a leftist party,” he noted. Augstein criticized the German media’s reaction that called for Angela Merkel not to accept the political development in Greece and make clear that Germany expects more. In addition, he noted that Tsipras is not irrational. The reporter stressed that Tsipras does not want Greece to exit the European Union, but he intents to break the violent doctrine of austerity imposed in Greece by Europe and the IMF.
