New Democracy MPs Propose Changes in Constitution

A committee of New Democracy MPs proposes changes in the Greek Constitution including the reduction of lawmakers in parliament to 200 and that the president of the Hellenic republic should have more power. The committee was appointed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. The proposals need the prime minister’s approval and at least fifty votes before they are tabled in parliament for discussion. The proposals submitted on Tuesday are: Reduction of MPs to 200 from 300 that it is now, the president of the republic should be given greater power, the president to be elected by popular vote if the House fails to vote the head of state after three ballots in parliament, and changes in the laws providing ministers and MPs with immunity from prosecution. If the proposals are approved by the prime minister and receive 50 votes in favor, the plenary will then vote on whether to form a committee to decide which articles of the Greek Constitution must be changed. The changes, however, cannot be voted by the present parliament.
