Train Connection Between Athens and Thessaloniki Disrupted

The train route connecting Greece’s capital Athens to the Northern Port city of Thessaloniki was disrupted today, after a train derailed at the Lilaia station in the Amphikleia region, central Greece. The cargo train derailed at 2:40 a.m., due to the heavy rainfall and the severe weather phenomena that prevailed in the region at that time. The train did not carry any passengers and fortunately the drivers and other staff aboard did not suffer any injuries. However, due to these circumstances the evening passenger train from Thessaloniki to Athens had to cancel its route and passengers were transferred to Athens by bus. Those that had planned to travel by train today are experiencing major delays, as their trip is carried out by train up to the Lianokladi-Tithorea train station and then by bus. Meanwhile, the technical teams of the Greek railway organizations, OSE and Trainose are on scene, working hard in their efforts to recover the train and fix the damaged train tracks.
