The first Thessaloniki-Istanbul Tango Fest will take place in Capsis hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece, on December 12 and 13, 2014. Male and female dancers from Greece and Turkey will participate in the event that will unite the two cities, showing that cultural differences can be surpassed. The event will include tango lessons, workshops and seminars by esteemed Greek, Turkish and Argentinian dance instructors, two evening milonga dance parties with live music provided by Locos de Atar, a band whose repertoire consists mainly of tango music. The festival is organized by dance schools in Thessaloniki (La Pequena Milonga, Tango Room), Athens (El Abrazo) and Istanbul (Academia de Tango, Tangoist). The organizing team hopes that the event will be a success, in which case it will be held every year, alternating between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. “With this kind of co-organized events, we want to send a message to the people, explaining that we can both live and create together through culture, without the obstacles set by our differences in language, religion and other issues,” said Stamatis Katharopoulos, member of the organizing team.
