Greek Employees of European Commission Involved in Fraud

The Athens Court of First Instance has brought three felony charges against four Greek companies in a scandal involving over 25 billion euros in EU subsidies for research and pilot programs in Greece. The case involves subsidies of two European Union programs: “Politeia” and the “European Foundation for Information Society.” According to reports, Greek employees of the European Commission in Brussels were faking information about the programs. Greek companies involved were also presenting false documentation in order to reap EU funds. Investigation of the matter was begun five years ago by OLAF (European Anti-Fraud Office). The case file arrived at the prosecutor’s office on October 1. Under orders by chief prosecutor Elias Zagoraios, prosecutors Christos Ntzouras and Georgios Kaloudis pressed charges against the four company representatives. The charges are fraud against the European Community, repeated forgery and money laundering. The case now sits at the magistrate’s office.
