Germany: Asylum requests by Syrians triple this year compared to 2013

by  Associated Press Syrian asylum claims in Germany triple in 1 year Associated Press - 15 October 2014 06:02-04:00 BERLIN (AP) — Germany says the number of asylum requests filed by Syrians has tripled to almost 25,000 in the first nine months of this year. During the same January-September period last year about 8,480 Syrian refugees asked for asylum in Germany. According to figures released Wednesday, Syrians fleeing the conflict in their home country have become the largest group of asylum seekers in Germany this year, far ahead of Serbs, Eritreans and Afghans. The fifth-biggest group is made up of Iraqis, with nearly 6,700 applicants. Many of the Syrians have come to Germany from other European Union countries that declined to register them. Under the bloc's rules, refugees must generally remain in the first EU country they land in — normally Greece or Italy.
