Reduced Pregnancies Due to Crisis

The financial crisis has reduced the sexual activity of Greeks, therefore leading to a decreased number of pregnancies. The bad psychological situation of Greek citizens, stress and insecurity are the most important factors leading to reduced desire for sex. On the occasion of the World Contraception Day, celebrated on September 26, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Athens Giorgos Kreatsas reported that “the reduction of abortions is not due to information on contraception but due to the reduced sexual activity of the Greek population.” Data presented by Kreatsas showed that there is almost a complete lack of information and sex education in Greece, as 48% of young people are informed on matters of sexual behavior from the internet, 32% from friends and only 7% from professionals. Established in 2007, WCD’s mission is to improve awareness of contraception and to enable young people to make informed choices on their sexual and reproductive health.
