An Ephemeral Hanging City in Piraeus

Using scaffolding, ropes and membranes, 170 architects, engineers and designers from 11 European countries have started constructing a hanging city in Piraeus port pier E2 for the first Greek HELLASTOCK which will run until September 4. HELLASTOCK is essentially the Greek version of BELLASTOCK, a French network of students and young architects which encourages cooperation in architectural projects, aiming to promote experimentation in the sector. The first BELLASTOCK took place in Paris, in 2006, and it was followed by similar events in Denmark, Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, Chile, Canada and Algeria. The Greek event is an initiative by students of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)‘s School of Architecture and is organized under the auspices of NTUA and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. As part of the event, a three-day construction workshop will be held on September 2, 3 and 4 in pier E2 at the port of Piraeus, which will become the Cultural Coast of Piraeus port, as well as five days of lectures, briefings, workshops and seminars from August 27 until September 1 at the NTUA’s School of Architecture. This year’s theme is hanging constructions. The students will build an ephemeral city which will be able to house large population groups and expand internally while students will have to find an easy way of suspension. Admission to all events is free to the public. After the end of the exhibition, the space will be reverted to its previous form.
