Tsochatzopoulos, 16 Others, Guilty in Corruption Case

ATHENS ? Former Greek defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, accused of stealing so much money from defense contracts he couldn't keep track of it, was found guilty on Oct. 7 of money-laundering and corruption, along with 16 of 18 other defendants, including his wife, ex-wife and daughter. The trial of Tsochatzopoulos was the most prominent against a major politician in decades and came as Greece is undergoing a crushing economic crisis with the government imposing harsh austerity meaures as citizens have railed against the country's elite and their impunity against crime and insulation against sacrifice. Tsochatzopoulos, 73, was one of the founding members of the PASOK Socialist party before he was booted out after his arrest.
