The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in the hopefully frozen confines of Sochi, Russia but it too will share the Olympic torch that lights the summer games. And to get there, the torch that is lit in Olympia, the site of the ancient Games, will travel on foot over the 560-meter Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge near the city of Patras in western Greece, a magnificent structure that ended the need for people and vehicles to get across the straits connecting two parts of Greece in the Peloponnese by boat. The bridge was opened in 2004, shortly before the Olympic Games in Athens that year. A flame lighting ceremony for the Winter Games in Sochi will take place on Sept. 29. Ancient Olympia is south of Patras. Russia, of course, is hoping for cold and snow, not a brilliant sunset such as this.
