Victim of Football Violence in Critical Condition

A 46-year-old football fan from Piraeus is hospitalized in critical condition on the island of Crete after a fight between fans of third division teams Irodotos and Ethnikos Piraeus. Konstantinos Katsoulis, supporter of Ethnikos Piraeus team, was attacked on Sunday as violence erupted between supporters of the two clubs at the Nea Alikarnasos football field. According to the medical report from the Venizelio hospital in Heraklion, the 46-year-old man was diagnosed with severe brain hemorrhage due to aneurysm rupture. The patient will be transferred to an Athens hospital for a life-saving operation. As the match was coming to an end, Irodotos fans reportedly attacked 15-20 Ethnikos supporters at the stands. The 46-year-old man received blows to the head that caused serious injury. Two more Ethnikos fans were also seriously injured. Ethnikos’ captain Manolis Lygkos urged the referee to end the game while the man received first aid treatment from the team’s doctor until the ambulance arrived. Local police announced the arrest of a 27-year-old man as suspect for the attack against Katsoulis. Two more arrests were made. This was the first incident of violence for the new football season in Greece.

One Dead From Flood in Northern Greece

The heavy rainfall in the municipality of Oreokastro, a Thessaloniki suburb in northern Greece, caused serious road damages and the death of a man. Greek authorities confirmed the death of a 49-year-old man and the serious injury of his 19-year-old son. The accident occurred after their car was overturned by the flood. The local fire department received an emergency call at 11:45 pm on Sunday. The rescue operation began immediately as eight firemen and four fire engines rushed to the spot. The operation ended three hours later, as it was very difficult for the rescue team to approach the vehicle. The 49-year-old was transferred to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The local fire department received a total of 85 emergency calls due to the heavy rainfall in the municipalities of Pella, Kilkis and Thessaloniki.

31 Countries That Have A Better Tax Code Than The United States

The US tax code is falling behind its international peers and now has the third worst tax code in the developed world according a new report from the nonpartisan think tank Tax Foundation. Tax Foundation's report, which was released Monday morning, found 31 0f the 34 developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have a better tax code than the US. France Tax Foundation attributed America's poor ranking to a high corporate taxe rate.  "The United States scores poorly largely because it maintains the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world at 39.1 percent and is one of the six remaining countries in the OECD with a worldwide system of taxation," the Tax Foundation said. "Its poorly structured property, individual, and capital gains and dividends taxes also contribute to the low ranking." At the other end of the list were Estonia, which ranked first, followed by New Zealand and Switzerland. The Tax Foundation praised Estonia for "having the most competitive tax system in the developed world" and a "relatively low" 21% taxation rate for corporations and individuals. The Tax Foundation, which has been accused by some groups of having a conservative bent, argued its findings should prompt the US and other countries into reforming their tax codes to be more like those its report identified as leaders on the issue. "No longer can a country tax business investment and activity at a high rate without adversely affecting its economic performance," a co-author of the report, Kyle Pomerleau, said in a statement. "In recent years, many countries have recognized this fact and have moved to reform their tax codes to be more competitive. However, others have failed to do so and are falling behind the global movement." The report comes as the debate over corporate inversions heats up in US politics.
