Varoufakis: Solution Visible, if Europe Shows Political Will

“The government has done what is humanly possible. Now the solution depends entirely on the political will of creditors,” said Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis on Monday. Varoufakis spoke to Red radio station right before he flew out to Brussels for today’s crucial Eurogroup. He stressed that “the government will not sign an agreement that will not give a way out of the crisis and will not address the major issues of debt, unemployment and recession.” “We need an income redistribution policy, shifting the burden of the crisis from the shoulders of many to those who had to carry the burden,” the finance minister said. At the same time, he appeared concerned about the suffocation imposed on the Greek economy, adding that the government’s goal is to have a solution within the coming days. Referring to the previous government’s actions regarding the debt and reforms, Varoufakis said that “our government has a different perception of what reform is, and our reforms have nothing to do with practices that led to decades without progress and without justice and held the country back.” Varoufakis also referred to the rehiring of finance ministry cleaners saying that their struggles were a symbol of resistance against the memoranda.
