A Cold War missile base abandoned for decades is on sale in New Jersey for $1.8 million - see inside
[Richard Lewis_PH58_Radar Area_Generator Bldg Exterior]Richard Lewis Photography * Woolwich Township, New Jersey is selling an old missile base from the Cold War. * The base was one of 12 built to protect Philadelphia from Soviet missiles. * The Army abandoned it in 1974, and the town bought it in 2009. * Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. A piece of Cold War history is up for sale in New Jersey, where a town is listing its Nike missile base for $1.8 million. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, launching an arms race that would continue throughout the Cold War. After Sputnik, the US responded with missiles of its own, and 12 Nike missile bases were built in Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey, surrounding Philadelphia. Project Nike was a US military plan of more than 250 bases across the country using an anti-aircraft missile system, named after the Greek goddess of victory. When this and other missile bases were decommissioned in 1974, they were offered to federal agencies, local governments, and private buyers. Woolwich Township only bought this base in 2009 for $828,000. Here's what the site looks like today. THE MISSILE BASE CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS, THE LAUNCHER SECTION AND THE RADAR SECTION. Richard Lewis Photography WOOLWICH IS ONLY SELLING THE RADAR SECTION, WHICH IS ABOVE GROUND. Richard Lewis Photography THE LAUNCHER SECTION, WHICH IS NOT FOR SALE, STILL HAS SOME MISSILES STORED UNDERGROUND, THOUGH THEY ARE SEALED. HATCHES ARE AT LEAST 30 FEET DEEP. Jilin officials raised the risk level of the city of Shulan to high from medium, having raised it to medium from low just the day before after one woman tested positive on Thursday. 1.02pm BST As the lockdown lifts in GREECE, people in the county – like many others in Europe – have been left astonished and alarmed by the UK government’s handling of the public health emergency. Britain’s chaotic strategy, initial soft-touch approach and high death toll have been met with disbelief in a country that, despite the eviscerating effects of a near decade-long debt crisis, has kept the virus under control. “Johnson’s management of the pandemic has been almost Mediterranean in style, flippant and carefree,” said the economic analyst ANTONIS PAPAGIANNIDIS. “You can’t help but think that people have been left to rot, that the interests of the economy were put before health.” Related: Greeks marvel at Britain's Covid chaos as their lockdown lifts after 150 deaths Continue reading...

Beating boredom is the first rule of toddler lockdown
Providing all the stimulation a young mind needs is tricky when he’s happy behind the sofa It’s hard to know how much lockdown is affecting my son. He’s now 22 months old and at this stage looks likely to be spending his second birthday in some form of quarantine or other. In a lot of ways, he got used to it quicker than we did, and we didn’t take much longer after that. One of the strangest parts of this whole saga has been how quickly it all became normal, barring my incessant longing for a mediocre meal in a mid-price Italian restaurant, and the constant low-level worry that he’s being starved of stimulus and will emerge from all this woefully behind all his friends because their mums and dads were actually good parents and had a nine-hour course of cultural delights planned each day. It doesn’t help that so many of the ‘great ideas for young kids’ you see online are so complex and labour intensive, and when we try them on him he seems resolutely uninterested and happy to continue doing his same old thing. We read to him, play games, do painting and building, speak to him all day in full sentences and try to keep screens to a minimum. We video-call his nana and grandad and make sure he has a little run-around in the park for half an hour every day. But we still fear it’s not enough. That we’re not enough, and he’ll arrive at his first day back at playgroup saying ‘nee naw’ at his new fire engine, while all his playmates are tuning their violas and punning in Greek. Greeks marvel at Britain's Covid chaos as their lockdown lifts after 150 deaths
Still resilient after taking tough and early action, Greece can now look forward to a summer tourist season beginning in July * CORONAVIRUS – LATEST UPDATES * SEE ALL OUR CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE When Pavlos Pandelides realised the coronavirus pandemic was moving west, he bought a plane ticket and flew from Athens to London. He then drove north to Nottingham to collect his daughter, a student at the city’s university, before returning with her the next day to Greece. An ardent admirer of all things British, the businessman had absolutely no doubt that what he was doing was right. “The British are fighters but I could see they were underestimating this,” he said. While Covid-19 was tearing through northern Italy, Boris Johnson was still faltering, with his government showing worrying signs of complacency. There was, said Pandelides, no time to waste. “It was more than a protective father thing. It was clear they were about to really mess up.” Mitsotakis is a details man who reads every study, every new bit of research about any advance on the virus Continue reading...
