BoG: €11.5 Bln of HFSF Can Be Used as Precautionary Credit Line
Greece has the ability to use the remaining 11.5 billion euros from its bank rescue fund as a preventive support line when it exits its European Union / International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout program, Bank of Greece (BoG) Governor Yannis Stournaras said in an interview to Greek newspaper “Ta Nea” today. “The fact that the European Central Bank‘s stress tests showed that Greek systemic banks do not lack capital, gives the Greek economy the opportunity to make use of the 11.5 billion euros of the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF) with greater complacency and flexibility,” Stournaras underlined in his interview. According to the BoG Governor, “the largest part of this amount could be used as a preventive support line returnable to the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). That way, it remains available in case it is needed either for the banking system or the wider needs of the Greek economy. It equally reduces the national debt as long as it is not used. Finally, since it reduces the debt, it enables the Greek government to negotiate a realistic relaxation of the primary surplus target for 2016, aiming at the overall benefit of the Greek economy and Greek society.” The Greek side, who is currently in talks with EU and IMF institutions, desires to exit its bailout program way ahead of schedule, on December 31, while the IMF plans to stay in the country until early 2016. The preventive credit line would serve as a cushion in the event that Athens encounters difficulties in funding itself from markets, while the Greek government tries to avoid strict and unpopular austerity measures in case of a new support program. However, as Reuters reported, bond markets appear nervous in regards to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the bailout program.
Greco-Turkish War of Words at NATO Assembly
A verbal confrontation between Greek and Turkish representatives broke out at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, regarding the latest Turkish activity in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). “We are troubled by the recent provocations of Turkey in Cyprus’ EEZ,” Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos said, underlining that this activity is a “flagrant violation of international law,” blaming Ankara for creating a crisis in an already unstable and troubled region. Venizelos’ statement lead Turkish ruling AKP party MP Osman Askin Bek to reply that “the shelve is accessible by all, and two people must decide how to use resources. Activity in the region cannot be unilateral; there must be an agreement to share the natural gas resources. There should be a convergence through the UN that starts from 2008 when negotiations started,” triggering an immediate response from the head of the Greek delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Evripidis Stylianidis. Stylianidis underlined that “at this critical juncture we should avoid challenges from both sides, as well as the creation of problems that may cause an issue in the region and the Alliance,” explaining that “the issue of the deposits should not be confused with the resolution of the Cyprus problem, which we insist on being settled”, and addied that “it would be desirable for Turkey to ratify the EEZ Agreement. Cyprus operates as a sovereign state in the region.” The Turkish AKP MP finally declared that his country does not have any claims over Cyprus and that the bilateral problems arise only at a political level. “There is no question on the borders between Greece and Turkey,” he stressed and commented on Greece’s policy to not remove the Turkish citizens’ travel visa requirement, while his country has already abolished the visa for Greek citizens.

Economist: Ancient Greeks Knew How to Raise GDP
Ancient Greeks had an understanding of the concept of capitalism and knew about economic growth, profit and gross domestic product maximization, according to an Economist article. In a series of articles on the concept of capitalism through the ages, the Economist uses Larry Neal and Jeffrey Williamson’s book entitled “The Cambridge History of Capitalism” as a reference. The article suggested that even though ancient Greeks did not know what capitalism was under the strict definition of the term, their practices were very similar to those of the modern capitalist model. There is a reference to ancient Greece and its sophisticated economy, according to which Greeks were raising their income by 0.07% to 0.14% per year, something that was phenomenal not only in ancient societies but even to societies until right before the industrial revolution. “Industry” was limited in ancient Greece and despite the fact mills could be considered as “capital” and the mill owners as “capitalists,” Greeks of that era believed that true capital was the ownership of arable land and slaves. The fact that ancient Greeks traded olives, olive oil, dried fruit and wine indicate that economic agents were operating with time horizons of at least several years, time needed to cultivate, grow and harvest on a regular basis. Before Greece, the first primeval signs of capitalism appeared in the Babylonian society at around 1000 B.C., with the concept of commerce and mass agricultural production.

Paul Auster Gives Lecture in Athens
Paul Auster, acknowledged as one of the most important contemporary authors in the United States, is visiting Athens, Greece. An event will be held at the Onassis Cultural Centre, where Auster will be presenting the unseen world of his books and life to a Greek audience. He will also be addressing the burning social and political issues afflicting his homeland and the world today. Entrance to all events in the “Talks and Thoughts” cycle of the Onassis Cultural Centre is free and on a strictly first come, first served basis. The distribution of entrance tickets begins one hour before each event. Auster has written a series of novels that include the celebrated New York Trilogy. Two of his most celebrated books, “Smoke” and “Blue In The Face”, have been turned into award-winning independent films. He is an American author and director whose writing blends absurdism, existentialism, crime fiction and the search for identity and personal meaning in his work. A charismatic narrator and gifted storyteller, Auster creates multidimensional worlds like few others. Auster’s protagonists often go through a process that reduces their support structure to an absolute minimum: they sever all contact with family and friends, end up hungry and lose or give away all their belongings. Out of this state of “nothingness” they either acquire new strength to reconnect with the world or they fail and disappear for good. The search for identity and personal meaning has permeated Auster’s later publications, many of which concentrate heavily on the role of coincidence and random events (The Music of Chance) or increasingly, the relationships between people and their peers and environment (The Book of Illusions, Moon Palace). Auster’s heroes often find themselves obliged to work as part of someone else’s inscrutable and larger-than-life schemes. In 1995, Auster wrote and co-directed the films Smoke (which won him the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay) and Blue in the Face. Auster’s more recent works, Oracle Night (2003), The Brooklyn Follies (2005), and the novella Travels in the Scriptorium, have also met critical acclaim.
Greek ‘SOS Children Villages’ Sends SOS Message
Over the last few years, the financial crisis has been the cause of operational problems for organizations such as ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ — a shelter for homeless children. The purpose of SOS Children’s Villages is to help children who are in need of care because they have lost their parents or are homeless for other reasons. The organization provides a home, food and education until the children are self-sufficient, while Youth Housing is also offered, where young adults have the opportunity to learn a professional trade in order to build a future for an independent adult life. Children are accepted by SOS Children’s Villages solely according to their needs and irrespective of race, nationality and creed. It is a concept that has had a powerful influence on work with abandoned and orphaned children worldwide. ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ General Manager, Giorgos Protopapas stated that the financial crisis has caused a decrease in necessary funds for the proper operation of the shelter. He has made a public appeal to ensure that children are not deprived of basic goods such as food and is requesting the public to donate provisions such as cereal, rice, canned food or even milk. The children’s organization provides shelter to more than 230 children and support through various programs to more than 1,500 families throughout Greece.
Napoli and Inter bosses feel the heat ahead of Europa League games; Kane looks to keep scoring
by Associated Press Napoli and Inter bosses feeling the pressure by JEROME PUGMIRE, Associated Press - 5 November 2014 10:02-05:00 PARIS (AP) — Napoli and Inter Milan coaches Rafa Benitez and Walter Mazzarri fear anything but wins in the Europa League on Thursday could cost them their jobs. They face Young Boys and Saint Etienne, respectively. The pressure has been building on Benitez following a slow start in Serie A. It has alleviated somewhat after three successive home wins but another defeat to the Swiss side would see it go right back up. Napoli fans pelted the team bus with stones after a 2-0 defeat against Young Boys in Switzerland ended a perfect record in Group I. Matters are worse for Inter, and even club president Erick Thohir appears to be losing patience with Mazzarri, who has overseen two wins in their last six games. Thohir is likely to travel to France for the match and has hinted that the former Napoli coach's future will be decided within two games. A goalless draw at San Siro left Inter comfortably atop of Group F, but calls for Mazzarri's head grew after a dismal 2-0 defeat at bottom club Parma. "I wish with all my heart that there are no matches like the Parma one," playmaker Hernanes said. "We don't want to throw this season away." Defending champion Sevilla looks to bounce back from its weekend defeat to Athletic Bilbao. Here are some things to know about Thursday's games: ___ KANE SO ABLE: Tottenham has found a young scoring talent in Harry Kane, and the 21-year-old forward will be confident of reaching double figures for the season at Greek side Asteras Tripolis. Kane score a hat trick against the Greek side at White Hart Lane two weeks ago, and his winning goal against Aston Villa last weekend took his season tally to an impressive nine in 13 appearances. He also netted in consecutive games for England Under-21s last month. Kane has taken some of the pressure off misfiring Emmanuel Adebayor, who has found the net only twice, and Spanish striker Roberto Soldado, who has yet to score. HUNGRY WOLFSBURG: Wolfsburg finally seems to be living up to the promise made possible by the financial support of Volkswagen. Apart from the championship year in 2009, Wolfsburg's stated ambition of becoming a permanent member of the Champions League could become true. The team has become more consistent under the guidance of coach Dieter Hecking and playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has shone. Wolfsburg is second in the Bundesliga on goal difference, and after being rewarded with two days off, the players should be hungry for goals at home to Krasnodar, having beaten the Russian side 4-2 away two weeks ago. With Everton facing a tricky home game against defensively robust Lille, this could be a chance for Wolfsburg to move to the top of Group H. "This is going to be the most important match for us in Europe thus far, and if we win we'll be on the right way," Croatia midfielder Ivan Perisic said. HOME FORTRESS: Getting a win at Sevilla promises to be a hard task for Standard Liege, considering the Spanish side has lost only one of its last 11 European home games. Under coach Unai Emery, Sevilla has made its best ever start to a league season and is right behind Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga. Sevilla drew 0-0 in Liege two weeks ago, and is one point ahead of the Belgian side in Group G. But Liege will be confident after winning its past three league games without conceding a goal. GIVE US A GOAL: When Michel Platini used to run Saint-Etienne's midfield toward the end of its European heyday in the 1970s, Les Verts used to score for fun. But this season it has been turgid stuff for Saint-Etienne fans in Europe, with three 0-0 draws making it dull to watch Christophe Galtier's brittle and well-organized team, where resolute defending and scrappy late goals have become the norm. Saint-Etienne has managed a meager 12 goals in 12 games in the French league, and top-scorers Max-Alain Gradel and Mevlut Erding have three each. Bloomberg: Greece Will Cover World Shortage of Olive Oil
Good news for Greek olive oil producers as Spanish production is reduced this year, a Bloomber report says. Greece will double olive oil production in order to offset the decrease in Spain. “international olive oil production is expected to drop in 2014-2015 and its price will skyrocket, because of extended drought periods and destruction of olive trees in Spain, but also because of the civil war in Syria,” said an international analyst to Bloomberg. Experts believe that olive oil production will be reduced by 3,190,000 tons in 2013-2014 and by 2,550,000 tons in 2014-2015. The main cause is the worst drought that ever hit Spain and last year’s record production that exhausted the trees. According to Bloomberg, Spain is the world’s largest olive oil producer and exporter. Spanish olive oil has a wide range of uses, such as in salads, canning, soap making, beauty products and more. The decrease of production in Spain will result in an increase in demand all over the world, especially within the European Union. The price of olive oil will rise accordingly and remain so for a prolonged period. Bloomberg expects that Greece will increase production of olive oil to offset the drop in Spain. Also, Syria will see a decrease in its production because of war in the area. It is estimated that Greece will double its production and export of olive oil, as it is expected to produce 300,000 tons next year, as opposed to the 158,000 tons the country produced in 2014.
