Kidnapping reports raise pre-referendum tensions in Crimea
Sevastopol (Ukraine) (AFP) - Ukraine's Greek Catholic Church said a priest was seized by armed men from a chapel in Sevastopol on Saturday, shortly after a pro-Russian group reported one of its leaders had been abducted. The two incidents are the latest in a series of kidnapping reports in Crimea, often involving activists for and against the referendum to be held on Sunday to decide whether the region should break away from Ukraine and join Russia. Father Mykola Kvich, a chaplain with Ukraine's armed forces, was taken from a parish near the city cemetery, the Church said.

Greek lawmaker leaves far right Golden Dawn party after 18 years, denounces violence
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Golden Dawn lawmaker has left the party, claiming he was shocked by recent allegations about violent activities by members of the extreme right party, including attacks on immigrants.
Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos will remain in parliament as an independent.
Golden Dawn's remaining 17 lawmakers have responded by calling Alexopoulos a "liar," ''defamer" and "coward" and calling on him to resign.
According to a resume posted on his personal website, now taken down, Alexopoulos joined Golden Dawn in 1996.
Greece's financial crisis helped Golden Dawn gain nearly 7 percent of the vote and 18 seats in Greece's 300-member Parliament.
A crackdown by authorities on the extreme right-wing party started after last year's fatal stabbing of an anti-fascist musician by a Golden Dawn supporter in Athens.

Civil service global roundup: Yemeni government pushes to eradicate civil service corruption and troika asks for Greek civil servants to be paid less
Scotland: no structural change would be needed after yes voteThe former permanent secretary of Scotland, Sir John Elvidge, has said that there will be no need for radical change to existing civil service structures in the country if Scotland votes for independence in the coming referendum.
Elvidge said the decision in 2007 to abolish individual departments and centralise the Scottish civil service had already given Scotland a sound model. Writing in the Guardian he said civil servants working for the Scottish government were already within the control of the Scottish permanent secretary and the country's ministers.
His statements follow the recent announcement that the Commons parliamentary administration select committee is to hold an inquiry into the role of the civil service in Scotland.
Yemen: government pushes to eradicate corruption in the civil serviceYemen has almost finished rolling out a new system involving fingerprinting and facial scanning, designed to tackle corruption in the military, security services and civil service.

Greece: troika asks for civil servants to be paid lessThe troika – visiting officials from the EU, IMF and European Central Bank – has asked Greece to lower wages for civil servants, Athens' daily newspaper the Kathimerini reported.
A new public sector employee with a university degree earns €1,090 euros a month. The troika also wants Greece to remove automatic pay rises for those working in the private sector, to appease the Greek government's lenders.
