4.4 Magnitude Tremor Shakes Up South of Crete

The Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens announced that an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 12:32 a.m. on Monday morning, in a maritime area southeast of Crete, Greece. It was felt around Ierapetra and the southeast coastline of the island. According to the announcement, the epicenter was 42 kilometers west of Ierapetra and 54.7 kilometers southeast of Heraklion, at a depth of about 17 kilometers. Earthquakes have historically caused widespread damage across central and southern Greece, Cyprus, Sicily and other neighboring regions. Last year a series of strong earthquakes on the island of Kefalonia damaged hundreds of homes and injured more than a dozen people.
