German Director Arrested for Filming Naked Scenes in Epidaurus

German director Matthias Langhoff was arrested for shooting scenes with a naked actress in the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, Peloponnese, southern Greece. According to Greek newspaper “Efimerida ton Syntakton,” the German director and his crew have been in the area since Thursday in order to film a documentary on his life and career. They had requested permission in order to proceed with the filming in the ancient theater until 2 after midnight, mentioning that no visitors are allowed. At some point, the guard saw a French actress naked in the theater and called the police, accusing the director and the crew of insulting the monument. The French and Swiss embassies have been informed on the case, as the German director has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the Greek archaeological service.

Pope Francis the 'pontiff of the poor', says Greece's Alexis Tsipras

Leftist opposition leader says he and Francis saw eye-to-eye on banks, profits and 'pan-human values' during Vatican talksGreek opposition leader Alexis Tsipras a radical leftist and self-described atheist has hailed Pope Francis as the "pontiff of the poor" after meeting him for talks at the Vatican. The Greek firebrand, among the loudest critics of the politics of austerity, emerged from discussions with the pope saying the two men had seen eye-to-eye on such issues as banks, profits and the need for Europe's left to deepen dialogue with the church. "We come from different ideological starting points," said Tsipras, Europe's first leftwing leader to be invited to the Vatican. "But we meet on [the matter] of pan-human values." Omera

They fled Afghanistan through Iran into Turkey. Then they crossed the Aegean to Greece in two waves. Her father and brother were on the first boat and they arrived safely. But when father returned to for his wife, he was picked up by authorities and accused of being a smuggler. The crime carries a minimum of 10 years in prison. Father languished in a Greek jail for a year while his 4-year-old girl waited for him. I take this photograph on a sunny day in August. The girl is with her dad again. The charges were dropped and he has just been released. Before I take the photograph, he holds her close. His memory of her was like a small space in his cell that expanded exponentially when invoked. In captivity he re-dreamed his life with his family. Now she writes her name -- Omera --in my notebook in Greek. She is very proud of this. An hour later her father leaves -- this time to Athens where he hopes to find work. He tells me that this is what it means to be a man. To work and provide. You can see the hole inside the little girl's heart when he rides away. I prefer to remember the moment of her smile -- a perfect innocence. Hardship is always easy to find.

Clashes During Rally for Pavlos Fyssas

Clashes occurred during a march held in Piraeus, Greece, in memory of rap singer Pavlos Fyssas who was stabbed to death a year ago by a Golden Dawn supporter. The march that started peacefully, turned violent when about 100 of the participants were involved in clashes. The rioters broke the windows of a public bus while they tried to set it on fire.  They also set fire to trash cans and used them as barricades, while Greek Police responded with tear gas. The rioters also attacked local shops, a bank, a store with mobile phones and a Citizen Service Centre (KEP). As reported, one bystander was injured while the police had no immediate reports of arrests. On September 18, 2013, the 34 year-old Greek rapper was stabbed by Giorgos Roupakias in the area of Keratsini, in Piraeus. Fyssas’ provocative comments against Golden Dawn led to the attack that caused his death. His murder triggered extensive investigation for the actions of the extreme-right party and led to the arrest of several Golden Dawn MPs, including party leader Nikos Michaloliakos. A monument in honor of Fyssas at the murder site in Keratsini was unveiled on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of friends, relatives and fans.

Jessie Ware on Tough Love, working with Miguel and getting mobbed in Poland

She bridges the gap between electronica and The X Factor, and her blend of crystalline pop and refined soul is a relief in a world of cloying attention seekers. So wheres her self-confidence?Did you give me a rooibos? splutters Jessie Ware, looking incredulously down at the mug of tea handed to her by Sam, her then-fiance, now husband. Fucking hell, you did. Control freak. Thats going to be reported in the Guardian: Jessie Ware, domestic prisoner. Shes joking, but when we meet in her flat in south London to chat over caffeine-free tea, her usually easy-going demeanour is tinged with an undercurrent of mania. Its not surprising her nearest and dearest are trying to keep her away from any stimulants; a later misunderstanding about a caramel wafer leads to an outburst worthy of an East End gangster. But its no wonder shes on edge: as well as trying to organise her impending wedding in Greece (her mum calls during our interview with news on the venue: I bet thats my mum Its my fucking mum! Sam, get it!), theres also the matter of her forthcoming second album, Tough Love, a mix of refined soul and crystalline pop. This juxtaposition between the artist (gregarious, deliciously foul-mouthed, prone to a good gossip) and the art (delicate, melancholic, sophisticated) is what makes Ware interesting. Cocooned in a loving relationship and on the cusp of marriage, she seems blissfully happy, yet Tough Love is littered with broken relationships. Im in a really happy stage of my life, but it doesnt mean I cant write about things that affect me or that I relate to from the past, she says. Songwriting is about storytelling. Historic Meeting of Tsipras With Pope Francis at the Vatican

Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras met today with Pope Francis at the Vatican and discussed the economic crisis in Greece, the migration issue and the need for politics that will re-inspire people as well as world peace. The meeting between the Pope and Tsipras lasted twice as long as planned. According to initial reports, during their 50-minute discussion, the two men talked about a wide range of subjects, but mainly about the economic crisis. “The Left and the Christian Church have different starting points but meet at the same core values: solidarity, love for the fellow-man, social justice and our wish for world peace,” Tsipras said after the meeting. The SYRIZA leader described Greece’s current situation to the Pope and spoke of a country that keeps sinking deeper into the crisis, which has now become a humanitarian crisis, and pointed out that “we need the support of wider forces across Europe” to terminate these policies. “Today I had the opportunity to discuss the economic crisis with Pope Francis. To discuss the need for politics to re-inspire people to collective values that are universal and effective against today’s dominant material values of profit and consumption,” he said. “We discussed the need for peace to return to the world, to terminate war interventions, the need to restore the value of solidarity, the need for people to be above profits. We asked him to continue fighting against poverty, talking about people’s dignity and the structural cause of poverty,” he added. The Pontiff mentioned what he called the ‘structural’ causes of poverty across the globe, pointing out that “Both in Europe and in my country, Argentina, priority was given in saving the banks and not the people,” to which Tsipras responded with a slogan of the Left, saying “People over markets,” a sentiment with which the Pope agreed. NBG Hires Advisers for Sale of Turkish Finansbank

National Bank of Greece (NBG) has hired other banks including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America Corp to work as advisers on the sale of 40% of Turkish Finansbank, reported Bloomberg. NBG is planning on selling its shares by the end of 2015, said Deputy Chief Executive Officer Paula Hadjisotiriou. The sale could prove to be beneficial for NBG since it is estimated that the 40% of Finansbank shares amount to 1.5 billion dollars. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) “Greece’s lenders, who have raised more than 8.3 billion euros from investors this year, may need more capital to resolve non-performing loans.” Finansbank contributed 497 million dollars to NBG profits in 2013, a number that shows a 9% drop compared to 2012. NBG acquired Finansbank in 2006. “We restate our intention that the bank will sell a minority stake, without having decided when, or the process,” said Dimitris Spyropoulos, a NBG spokesman.

British Tourist Killed in Jet Ski Crash in Santorini

A 39-year-old British tourist, whose name hasn’t been announced yet, was killed on Wednesday in a jet ski crash on the island of Santorini. The man had visited the Greek island to spent his honeymoon. The British tourist along with a friend had rented two jet skis in the area of Kamari, where the accident occurred. Due to dangerous handling, the two jet skis crashed, causing the injury of the British man. At first, he thought that his wounds were superficial and after receiving first aid, he returned to his hotel. Early next morning, his wife transferred him to the local clinic where doctors found that he was suffering from internal bleeding. The unfortunate man died as he was being airlifted to a hospital in Heraklion, Crete. The owner of the water sports rental and the British tourist’s 29-year-old friend were arrested and will appear before a state prosecutor on the island of Naxos on Friday. A Foreign Office spokesman said, “We are aware of the death of a British national in Greece on the 17th of September. We are providing consular assistance to his family at this sad time. We are aware of the arrest of a British national in Greece and are providing consular assistance.”

BREMMER: If Scotland Votes For Independence, Prepare For The European 'Contagion' Effect Across Europe

Stunning developments in recent weeks have made Scottish independence — which is set for a Sept. 18 vote — a very real possibility. The Scots will vote Thursday on whether they will seek independence from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. New polls showing a recent shift in public opinion has suddenly made independence much more plausible.  And if Scotland does vote for independence, it could be the start of a domino effect for similar situations throughout Europe, analysts say. Other areas have been seeking to hold independence referendums — Spain, for example, is worried that Scotland's situation could embolden separatists in the Catalonia region, though a  tentatively scheduled referendum set for Nov. 9 in Catalonia has been ruled unconstitutional by Spanish courts. Geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer, the president of Eurasia Group, said Monday he doesn't expect Scots to end up voting for independence. But if they pull off a shocker, there could be many reverberating effects from the vote — one being that other separatist-fueled areas will be encouraged. "If it does happen, this European ‘contagion’ risk that you mention is very real," Bremmer, told Business Insider on Monday. "Other countries will look very closely at how European institutions and member states would manage it. In Spain, Prime Minister Rajoy and the Constitutional Court have both ruled out a similar referendum for Catalonia. But a ‘yes’ in Scotland would make for a much noisier situation in Spain. After a ‘yes’ vote, Scotland would effectively become the pioneer, carving a path forward that Catalonia would try and follow." In addition to Catalonia, the Basque region of Spain also is home to a budding legion of separatists who want to vote for independence. Other, less mature independence movements that could grow include the Dutch-speaking Flanders region of Belgium, as well as Venice and other areas in northern Italy.  A "yes" vote in Scotland would likely lead to a tenuous, uncertain situation as it tries to regain membership into the European Union by the time it would become fully independent in March 2016. To get back into the EU would require a unanimous vote by current members, which may be impossible as countries like Spain and Belgium would want to use the situation as a deterrent to separatist movements in their own countries. "That would be incredibly messy, precisely because countries like Spain and Belgium would have an incentive to bar Scottish membership given their own situations," Bremmer said. "We saw the same thing when Greece was on the ropes a few years ago: if Athens had moved for the Eurozone exit, members had strong incentives to make that a scorched path, an economically violent process that would keep others from following in Greece’s footsteps. Some EU members would surely make an example out of Scotland." Scottish independence would also lead to a host of other questions: Would it be able to still use the British pound, which fell to its lowest level in 10 months on news of the polls? Would it be able to stay a member of NATO?  All of those questions would have to be sorted out. But the biggest effect of Scottish independence, Bremmer said, could be the ultimate change of Britain's political landscape. Currently, 40 of Scotland's 59 members parliament come from the Labour party compared to just one from the conservative-leaning Tories.  As Bremmer explained, Scottish independence would "tilt the entire U.K. political spectrum to the right." That would boost the odds of a conservative majority winning in 2015. Ultimately, he said, it could be a "game-changer" for the chances of a referendum on an "in-or-out" referendum on the U.K.'s place in the E.U. Prime Minister David Cameron has proposed a referendum in 2017 if the conservative party wins an outright majority next year. "If Scotland votes ‘yes,’ down the road would come the ultimate irony," Bremmer said. "The U.K. would be more likely to pull out of the E.U., while Scotland clamors to get in."Join the conversation about this story »

Johnny Walker's Trudge Into the Unknown

How the Scottish Referendum alters the notion of culture in the European Union. Ever since his birth in 1908 by illustrator Tom Browne, the Striding Man in the logo of the famous scotch whiskey is the most famous Scotsman in the world. Wearing upper class attire with top hat, red tail coat, white riding trousers and riding boots he has been walking confidently ever since, in broad strides. This emblematic figure is symbolized forward thinking and the pursuit of excellence, two Scottish qualities that the whiskey incorporated in its marketing philosophy. Is he leading the Scots back into the embrace of Westminster or is he leading Scotland away from the Union, like some sort of modern-day Moses? Scotland is the most visible link in a chain of European large provinces, defined within the European Union as "regions." Despite the fact that they are part of larger European sovereign countries, these regions possess very strong local cultural, linguistic, or religious identities. These distinctive characteristics make these regions skeptical about their links with the mother country. Oddly enough, in most cases regions happen to be wealthier than the country with which they feel trapped into a loveless marriage: industrial Catalonia versus the less wealthy Spain; the wealthier Flanders opposed to its Walloon poorer relatives in a fragile union that forms Belgium; the up-and-coming rebellious Island of Corsica voicing its discontent against French President Francois Hollande with loud bangs of bomb explosions; and finally that strange region of Thrace, a Muslim enclave in Northern Greece which, in a low-key manner, moves toward asserting itself and imposing the rights of its religious community. This is achieved by the rapid increase of its population. All of these regions are also characterized as political backwater, meaning that their political clout does not play a leading role in the policy of the wider sovereign state to which they belong and initiatives are mostly reduced to the administration of local politics. In order to further reduce the influence of a region, historically the sovereign state markets an even greater distance between the region and itself. This results in the image of a remote land populated by people with particular behavior and a very idiosyncratic culture which the state incorporates in its own cultural framework. Salvador Dali and Juan Miro and architect Gaudi were Catalans yet Spain embraced them as its standard official artists of a multicultural Spanish culture. Traditionally Scotland received such a treatment. This sense of a "far-away land" was brilliantly portrayed by writers such as John Buchan who in his Thirty-nine Steps describes: "In front was a flat space of maybe a mile, all pitted with bog holes and rough with tussocks, and then beyond it the road fell steeply down to another glen to a plain whose blue dimness melted into the distance. To the left and right were round shouldered green hills as smooth as pancakes.I was on the central boss of a huge upland country, and could see everything moving for miles. In the meadows below the road a cottage smoked, but it was the only sign of human life.Otherwise there was only the calling of plovers and the tinkling of little streams." About fifteen years ago on my way to Edinburgh, I was driving along a similar solitary landscape. Instead of taking the motorway I had selected the scenic back road. The road was freshly coated with Tarmac and the pitch was so immaculately laid that the wheels glided smoothly along. Reaching a remote hilltop I parked the car on the side to enjoy the view. A prominent road sign caught my attention. It informed passersby with big letters that the road had been repaired with funds of the European Union. In the middle of nowhere the EEC made its presence felt. Scots were always aware of the benefits that the EE showered in all the regions of the European "periphery." The successive local administrations have been very instrumental in exploiting such geographically targeted financial programs. As a result, Scots are very pro-European. Where they draw the line is that they are very nationalistic, the word anathema to European legislators. But their culture has been recognized and respected throughout Europe. At the mention of the word "Scotland" criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands of various colors come to mind. Woven in various kinds of material, these bands create a motif. The motif in turn spreads into a pattern as it appears on woolen skirts, cotton berets, blazers, curtains, rugs. This is the "tartan," the most prevailing Scottish emblem. Identifying its place of origin, Scotland, the tartan has an impressive array of ambassadors ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh strolling on the hills of his Balmoral Scottish estate wearing a kilt, to Sean Connery, to Mel Gibson as Scottish hero Braveheart, to fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who turned her fashion show into a political rally by having her models carry YES on the catwalk. So recognizable is this emblem that In fact you can take the tartan out of Scotland but you cannot take Scotland out of the tartan. Add to these trappings a tartan blanket across a man's shoulder, give him a rifle in hand and you have a member of the Scottish highland regiments that was a key factor for Wellington's victory over Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. Add the sounds of bagpipes as background music, and you have the Scottish regiments that led for over two centuries military parades across an Empire so vast that "the sun could never set on it," as Scottish writer John Wilson referred to the expansion of the British Empire across the globe. Scotland joined in the creation of a commercial world empire at the center of which were the British Isles. Britain not only dominated this empire economically, politically and militarily but also emotionally by creating and exporting an imperial identity also known as "Britishness." Britishness became a collective experience reminding nations of the dominant role of Great Britain in the world. The British way of life became the adopted lifestyle of the elites around the world, who sent their children to British schools, observed the ritual of high tea and attended cricket matches that in some distant shore would evolve into baseball. Scottish culture was central to this trend. Scotch whiskey became the drink which separated the boys from the men and the prevailing British spirit worldwide. The symbolism of the sturdy crystal glass with the weighted bottom designed to hold this spirit alluded to the power of the land from where the drink originated. Scotland also revolutionized our lives against the elements of nature when in 1823 a chemist from Glasgow, Charles Macintosh, treated a cotton fabric spreading rubber on it and came up with the first waterproof coat. The Mackintosh Raincoat crossed over from necessity to fashion and still is considered the sartorial symbol of Britishness. With all these elements of Scottish culture predominating in the culture of the British Isles, why should Scotland wish to break away from a bond? The deepest causes of the the referendum cannot be tracked in glossy magazines or in literary pages, nor in the breezy moorlands, nor within the walls of a haunted castle. They lie hidden under the earth, literally below the ocean floor. The main reason for the Scottish referendum is a three-letter word: oil! Ninety-one percent of the estimated 24 billion barrels that are presumed to lie in waiting beneath the waves of the North Sea also lie in Scottish territorial waters. With the new technological advances of offshore drilling and fracking, deep water drilling in remote locations has become a much more realistic prospect. An independent Scotland would force all oil-related companies to move to the cities of Scotland, generating a boost in the economy and real estate. All these arguments can be easily dismissed by the "No" movement with more moderate counter arguments. But there is one point where the "Yes" movement finds no opposition: Alex Salmond, the man who wants to lead Scotland on the road to independence, is an oil economist by trade. He knows every turn of the business and asks one simple question: "Why should Scotland share the North Sea oil income when it has the chance to keep it for itself?" It is this simple and basic question along with his deep knowledge of the field that rallies the population around Alex Salmond to such an unprecedented degree. Not since the preacher John Knox have the Scots flocked around a public figure for guidance. Knox's preaching was instrumental in driving Mary Queen of Scots away from her realm and into exile in England where she was executed for refusing to renounce the rights of her son to the throne of England. With her death she paved the way to the throne for her son, who by becoming King James the First united England and Scotland into Great Britain in 1603. In only a few hours we will find out if Salmond's call will be strong enough to reverse this four hundred year long union. Regardless of whether the Scottish electorate will vote for the "high road" or the "low road," the too close to call margin of the last few days will make it very hard for England and Scotland to walk once more hand-in-hand into the sunset. "The Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond" will never again be regarded as a distant nostalgic dreamland -- the cultural byproduct of a political backwater area. Other socio-economic factors will be defining the "region." Scotland will most likely become an example to follow by other "regions" contemplating autonomy or even independence. And culture will be used as a weapon to promote economic policy. Under this light, the Scottish Referendum has altered the cultural face of Europe forever. _______ Radou Michael Moussou has been an elected municipal councillor for the city of Athens. He is currently the president of the Lycabettus society for the preservation of national patrimony in Athens city of Athens.
