Greece on collision course with lenders as ESM freezes debt relief
European financing body says it will not honour accord after Greek PM announced pre-Christmas bonus for pensioners The dispute between Greece and its creditors has turned more ugly after the European body financing the country’s €86bn (£72bn) bailout programme decided to freezea debt relief deal. The prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, was taken by surprise on Wednesday when the European Stability Mechanism announced it would not honour an accord to ease the burden of Greece’s debt pile. The decision, taken in direct retribution for a series of surprise social welfare measures unveiled by the leader, is likely to put Athens on a war footing with lenders amid mounting signs of the Greek crisis flaring again. Everyone has to respect the Greek people, who for the last seven years have made huge sacrifices in the name of Europe Continue reading...
Eurozone ministers won't budge an inch on Greek finance measures
Greece exceeded budget surplus target of 1.5% but with the eurozone’s 2018 target at 3.5%, more hardship is around the corner Here’s a safe prediction for 2017: the Greek debt crisis will turn ugly again. In fact, the next chapter has already begun. On Wednesday, eurozone finance ministers put their plan for short-term debt relief on hold because Athens handed a relatively small sum of money to pensioners at Christmas and said it would pay for school meals for 30,000 children in impoverished areas. In the view of Alexis Tsipras, Greek prime minister, the country has earned the right to make small acts of generosity, like €617m (£518m) for pensioners. Greece didn’t just meet its target to run a budget surplus of 1.5% last year, it exceeded it. That achievement was secured after seven years of austerity, a period in which Greece also found itself at the front end of Europe’s migration crisis. Continue reading...

The 5,000-year history of interest rates shows just how historically low US rates are right now
Virtually all market watchers expect the Federal Reserve to raise its benchmark interest rate on Wednesday by 25 basis points to a range of 0.50% to 0.75% from the current range of 0.25% to 0.50%. That would be the first rate hike in 2016. But rates aren't just low within the context of American history. They also happen to be at the lowest levels in the last 5,000 years of civilization. Citing a speech by Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane, Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Michael Hartnett and his team previously shared the chart below, which shows just how low today's rates are relative to other times in history. [screen shot 2015 09 18 at 10.12.09 am]BAML Haldane's list of sources for this is pretty staggering. (You can look through them all here.) So to make things a bit clearer, we put together an annotated list of key historical episodes and the corresponding interest rate of the time, using the data from "The Trader and His Shadow." Behold: * Mesopotamia, c. 3000 BC: 20% * Babylon, Code of Hammurabi, 1772 BC: codified earlier Sumerian custom of 20%. * Persian conquest (King Cyrus takes Babylon), 539 BC: rates of 40+%. * Greece, Temple at Delos, c. 500 BC: 10% * Rome, Twelve Tables, 443 BC: 8.33% * Athens/Rome: circa the first two Punic Wars, 300-200 BC: 8% * Rome: 1 AD: 4% * Rome, under Diocletian, 300 AD: 15% (ESTIMATED) * Byzantine Empire, under Constantine, 325 AD: LIMIT 12.5% * Byzantine Empire, Code of Justinian, 528 AD: LIMIT 8% * Italian cities, c. 1150: 20% * Venice, 1430s: 20% * Venice, (Leonardo da Vinci paints "The Last Supper in Milan"), 1490s: 6.25% * Holland, beginning of the Eighty Years' War, 1570s: 8.13% * England, 1700s: 9.92% * US, West Florida annexed by the US, 1810s: 7.64% * US, circa World War II, 1940s: 1.85% * US, Reagan administration, 1980s: 15.84% * US, Fed does not hike rates in September 2015: 0-0.25% * US, Fed does hike rates in December 2015: 0.25-0.5% NOW WATCH: Why almost every pair of jeans has a zipper that says ‘YKK’
