France slump to friendly defeat in Albania

Elbasan (Albania) (AFP) - Lacklustre France suffered another disappointing friendly defeat on Saturday as the Euro 2016 hosts went down 1-0 to Albania in the city of Elbasan.A first-half free-kick by Ergys Kace gave Albania victory over the side they previously held to a 1-1 draw in Rennes back in November, as France lost for the second time in a week after going down 4-3 at home to Belgium last Sunday.Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps rotated his squad for the game played in sweltering late afternoon conditions, with the ill Paul Pogba among those missing from the away line-up.Seven changes were made to the team well beaten by Belgium at the Stade de France as the likes of Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette -- scorer of 27 goals in Ligue 1 in the season just finished -- were handed starts. But they lacked any appetite against one-time minnows Albania, now coached by the Italian Gianni De Biasi and who are unbeaten in Euro 2016 qualifying so far, with the exception of their match in Serbia which was awarded as a 3-0 home win following trouble in Belgrade.Albania showed they were more than a match for a French side who, perhaps understandably, appeared desperate for their summer holidays to begin.Hugo Lloris made a crucial save from Ermir Lenjani before the goal that decided the game arrived in the 43rd minute.Kace, the tiny 21-year-old with Greek club PAOK, curled a superb free-kick from 20 yards high into the top left-hand corner of the net to give Lloris no chance as the French suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since June 2013."This evening there was an opponent with more determination who were well organised and we were unable to find the solution," said Deschamps."I am especially angry and disappointed because I am responsible. I choose the players, the system, decide who comes on and who goes off."I will take the time to analyse it but it has not been a favourable period for us," added Deschamps, whose team are next in action away to Portugal in Lisbon on September 4."Our victory is deserved. France have great quality but they lacked the determination to play. It was an end of season game," said De Biasi, whose side are third in Euro 2016 qualifying Group I before their next match in Denmark in September.Join the conversation about this story »

Mini Tax Bill to Be Tabled in Greek Parliament on June 16

A mini tax draft bill submitted by the Greece’s Finance Ministry will be tabled at the Parliament plenum for approval on Tuesday, June 16, in a fast track procedure, a move that was widely criticized by the opposition. Apart from the SYRIZA/ANEL coalition, the bill is expected to be approved by New Democracy, “To Potami” and PASOK, which also approved it in principle during its discussion at the parliament committee. Greek Alternate Finance Minister Nadia Valavani faced criticism for tabling the bill while Greeks are in the process of submitting their tax declarations and admitted there has been significant delay. “It is unacceptable that we submitted it with such delay and with tax declarations still ongoing, but this bill includes favorable regulations for lifting (even at the eleventh hour) extreme injustices of the tax system,” she said. Greek Sports Minister: Athens Olympic Games Were a Catastrophe for the Greek Economy

Greek Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis characterized the Athens Olympic Games “a bad example” in an interview to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on the occasion of the European Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Kontonis said that the way the Olympic Games were organized and the major works in Athens were implemented was disastrous for the Greek economy and regional growth, which was never achieved in Greece during that period. He estimated that the total cost of the Athens Olympic Games reached 20 billion euros and this is something that countries in similar financial situation should be aware of. Kontonis is in Baku representing the Greek government in the opening ceremony of the 1st European Games. He will also participate in the unofficial Ministerial meeting of the 47 Council of Europe member-states on Saturday. (source: ana-mpa)

Greek Opposition ‘To Potami’ Urges Tsipras to Make ‘Honorable Compromise’

Greek opposition “To Potami” called on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to make an “honorable compromise” and reach an agreement with creditors. “Mr. Tsipras will either make a bold move forward or stand still and be swept away by the tide of developments. We call on him to proceed with an honorable compromise,” “To Potami” said in an announcement, adding that it is hard to know which of the “ultimatums” leaked to the press are real and which not. “What is now certain is that there are no margins for shilly-shallying. If he finds it hard to make the decision alone, let him inform other political leaders and invite them to share the responsibility and political cost. Personal and party expediency must finally be set aside. By everyone,” the announcement underlined. (source: ana-mpa)

Six Charts Show How the Greek Economy Plunged in Six Months

A Bloomberg report used six charts to show how the Greek economy went back into recession in the six months between the call for presidential elections in December 2014 and today. According to the report, the New Democracy/PASOK coalition had brought Greece one step from a shy economic recovery. But when snap elections were called after the government failed to elect a new President of the Hellenic Republic, the recovery proved to be so fragile that the plunge back into recession was easy. Investors were the first to flee after seeing leftist SYRIZA coming to power, promising to clash with creditors over bailout terms. Then Greek depositors started to withdraw massively, leaving Greece out of liquidity by the end of March. The new leftist government faced massive cash outflows and had to heavily rely on the European Central Bank (ECB) for funding through junk bonds and emergency liquidity assistance (ELA). “We’ve got massive capital outflow, we’ve got a huge debt that’s not sustainable, we’ve got a recession and there’s no investment,” Gianluca Ziglio, a fixed-income strategist at Sunrise Brokers LLP, told Bloomberg. “It’s a tragic situation from all points of view.” Still, the Alexis Tsipras government has held back on agreeing terms demanded by creditors longer than many anticipated. The ongoing negotiations led to wild swings in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE). The report concluded with a quote by economist Holger Schmielding: “The more time passes, the deeper is Greece descending into a costly renewed recession and the harder it will be for Greece to get a good deal.”

Tsipras seeks debt relief as Greeks take offer to Brussels

By Renee Maltezou and Jan Strupczewski ATHENS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he was willing to accept unpalatable compromises to secure a deal with international creditors, provided he gets debt relief in return, something that Germany refuses to countenance. With Greece heading towards possible default and bankruptcy, he told his negotiating team before it took a counter-proposal to Brussels that without debt relief he would say "no" to any settlement with the EU and IMF that isolate his country from the rest of Europe. In little more than a fortnight, Athens must repay 1.6 billion euros to the International Monetary Fund with money it does not have.
