Ebola Virus Outbreak: Greece Warns Against Traveling to West Africa

Fears for an epidemic by killer Ebola virus in West Africa caused Greek Health Ministry officials warned Greek citizens against traveling to West Africa, unless it is absolutely necessary. The worst Ebola outbreak in history has killed at least 932, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday. Between Saturday and Monday, 45 people died of the disease in West Africa, while the number of cases in the region rose by 108, the WHO reported. The Health Ministry officials had a meeting with representatives of the Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) on Tuesday in order to discuss potential measures to avoid an outbreak of the Ebola virus in Greece. Greeks who need to travel to West Africa are advised to first seek guidance from KEELPNO and take the necessary precautions so they don’t contract the deadly virus. Furthermore, the Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention also noted that any passengers arriving in Greece from countries where people have died from the virus should be screened. According to disease experts, there is minimal risk of the virus reaching Greece by migrants due to the fact that only one migrant out of 6,500 who have arrived in Greece in recent months was from West Africa. The Ebola virus has killed more than 800 people in West Africa, a number much higher than the World Health Organization expected. The warning from Greece comes only a week after the U.S. also advised its citizens to avoid traveling to West Africa.

Ive got a word for Scrabble champions: mathematicians

So TE has made it into the Scrabble dictionary. It adds weight to the theory that love of language is a hindrance in this gameThe world of Scrabble is AGOG (score 24 if you managed to got one of the Gs on a double-letter score and the whole word on a triple-word score; give up if youve used it without the multipliers). The word TE has just been added to the revised edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. For Scrabble addicts, this is the HOLY (H on a triple-letter square to score 18, of course) grail. Being able to hook an E underneath T means that I can play far more words, says Robin Pollock Daniel, a Canadian Scrabble expert. I call those the amino acids of Scrabble. The more two-letter words we have, the more possibilities a word will fit.TE, as you will know, is a variant of TI, the seventh tone on the musical scale. It joins AA, AG, AI, AL, EL, ES, FY, KI, KO, KY, MI, MM, MU, NU, OE, PE, XI, XU, YU and ZA on the approved list, although you could go through several lifetimes and never hear this motley collection of abbreviations, archaisms and Greek and Hebrew letters in everyday speech. These may be the amino acids of the quasi-professional Scrabble players tragically circumscribed life, but they are not real words. Can you define a single one of them? Continue reading...

Destruction of Syria’s Chemicals Continues Off Crete

According to an official announcement by the UN Security Council, more than 60% of Syria’s chemical weapons have already been destroyed. The destruction of the chemicals takes place in international waters off the coast of Crete, between Greece, Italy and Malta, causing widespread protests among local authorities of Crete and Greek residents. Scientists have expressed serious concerns about the possibility of an accident that would turn the entire sea area into a dead zone. According to the UN Security Council, neutralization of the chemicals  will be completed by the end of the week. Syria agreed to surrender its chemical arsenal last year when the US threatened missile attacks in retaliation for a chemical attack on a suburb of Damascus which is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people. In early July, 600 metric tons of Syria’s most toxic chemicals were transferred onto the US cargo vessel MV Cape Ray in the Italian port of Gioia Tauro. The ship later moved into international waters and began the two-month process of destroying the chemicals. Syria’s chemical arsenal includes sarin nerve gas and mustard gas. After the destruction, hazardous byproducts will be transferred to special installations in Germany and Finland for further processing.

The 20 Most Fun Colleges In America

Higher education is certainly an opportunity to study and learn, but college can also be the most fun four years in someone's life. There's good reason for this — college is a time of seemingly endless parties, a constant supply of alcohol, and cherished sports teams to cheer on with fellow students. In order to find the most fun colleges in the country, we looked at 12 categories from The Princeton Review's 2015 college rankings, combining the rankings to determine the most overall fun schools in the country. Click here to read our complete methodology. Many of the schools that made our list share common traits. The typical "fun" school, based on our results, is a large public university with a strong Greek life and competitive athletics. This is not to say that these colleges are all play and no work. Many of these schools were nationally ranked for their academics as well. Clemson University was our number one most fun college, but only appeared on five of the 12 Princeton Review lists we considered. However, while not the number one school in any category, Clemson placed in the top three on every list it was included on, including Students Love These Colleges, Happiest Students, and Students Pack The Stadiums.#20 Miami University Oxford, Ohio Miami houses the founding chapters of several now-national fraternities and still maintains a large and active Greek life. One of Princeton Review's top Party Schools, Miami students always have somewhere to party, either at a frat house or a local bar. #19 Auburn University Auburn, Alabama The Princeton Review's top Jock School, Auburn Tiger football games are packed with students shouting "War Eagle" — the school's battle cry — especially during the annual Iron Bowl against rival the University of Alabama. The most recent matchup between the two SEC powerhouses was named "Game of the Year" by ESPN following an unbelievable last minute upset by Auburn. #18 Bucknell University Lewisburg, Pennsylvania A small school with a large Greek scene, more than half of Bucknell's students are in a fraternity or sorority. With not much else to do in the surrounding area, students' social lives are pretty much restricted to campus — where there is always a lot of alcohol and someone throwing a party. Our Methodology For The 20 Most Fun Colleges

We recently released a list of the most fun colleges based on a compilation of several rankings from The Princeton Review's 2015 Best Colleges book. In order to determine the lists that were included in our ranking, we looked for categories that would show a strong social life, high student investment in athletics, and lots of alcohol. Once we identified these Princeton Review categories, we inverted the lists in order to award a larger amount of points to the schools ranked higher. For example, 20 points went to the #1 school on a list, 19 points to the #2, 18 to the #3, and so on through #20, which received a single point. We then added up all the points we designated to each school to determine an overall ranking. Although no school appeared in all the lists we surveyed, every college in our top 20 was featured in three or more Princeton Review rankings. Our highest ranked school — Clemson University — recieved 94 overall points. Our lowest ranked school in the top 20 — Miami University — recieved 36 points. We broke any ties in our list by giving the advantage to the school with the higher ranking in a common category. In some cases, we used editorial discretion to award a school a higher position on our list based on which categories they were included in. We also removed any schools that were only included on three more general rankings — Their Students Love These Colleges, Happiest Students, Best Quality of Life. Here are the Princeton Review rankings we compiled for our list: Their Students Love These Colleges Students Study the Least Everyone Plays Intramural Sports Best Athletic Facilities Party Schools Jock Schools Lots of Hard Liquor Lots of Beer Lots of Greek Life College City Gets High Marks Happiest Students Best Quality of Life Read the entire list here FOLLOW US! Check Out BI Colleges On Facebook Join the conversation about this story »

New Fox-Sized Dinosaur Unearthed In Venezuela

The fossil of a new two-legged, fox-sized dinosaur relative of both Stegosaurus and Triceratops, which dates back about 200 million years, has been discovered in Venezuela. The find suggests that dinosaurs advanced quickly across the globe after a mass extinction claimed at least half of all species on Earth, researchers say. This new fossil, the first named dinosaur unearthed from northern South America, also provides evidence that dinosaurs lived in herds early on in their evolution, and were able to dwell in regions previously thought too inhospitable for dinosaurs to survive. The new dinosaur is named Laquintasaura venezuelae. Laquintasaura is Greek for "lizard of La Quinta," the rock formation where the reptile was discovered in the Andes, while venezuelae refers to the country of Venezuela, where the dinosaur was unearthed. [See Images of the Newfound Little Dinosaur] The dinosaur was about 3 feet (1 meter) long and only stood up to about 1 foot (0.3 m) high. Judging by its teeth, it was an omnivore. "The teeth are very unusual, with a tall, narrow triangular outline, tips that are slightly curved backward, coarse serrations along the margins and thin ridges that extend up and along the crown," said lead study author Paul Barrett, a vertebrate paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London. "This combination of features is unknown in any other dinosaur. Although the triangular shape and coarse serrations suggest that plants made up most of the diet, the tall outline is reminiscent of meat-eating teeth, as are the slightly curved tips, so it is possible that Laquintasaura took small prey such as large insects some of the time." Laquintasaura was an ornithischian or "bird-hipped" dinosaur, an early relative of titans such as duck-billed hadrosaurs, the armored stegosaurs and ankylosaurs, and three-horned Triceratops. The other major dinosaur lineage were the saurischian or "lizard-hipped" dinosaurs, which included giant long-necked sauropods such as Brachiosaurus and predatory theropods such as Velociraptor and T. rex. (Birds actually evolved from saurischians, not the so-called bird-hipped ornithischians.) Laquintasaura lived about 200 million years ago, "placing it in the earliest part of the Jurassic period, a time when dinosaurs were just starting their ascent to global dominance," Barrett told Live Science. This dinosaur was alive soon after the end-Triassic mass extinction event. This mass extinction was one of the big five mass extinctions to affect life on Earth — the most recent one, the end-Cretaceous, which was about 67 million years ago, ended the age of dinosaurs. Dinosaurs originated about 230 million years ago, in the late Triassic, but only achieved global dominance beginning 30 million years later, after the cataclysmic end of the Triassic. [Wipe Out! History's 7 Most Mysterious Extinctions] "In many ways, this extinction was a major help to dinosaurs, as it killed off a number of other reptile groups that might have been competitors," Barrett said. "Laquintasaura is known only 500,000 years after the extinction, and shows that ornithischians were quick off the mark during this recovery period." Recently, scientists have unearthed a trove of early saurischian dinosaurs, such as meat-eating Eodromaeus and plant-eating Eoraptor. However, early ornithischian fossils have proven quite scarce — this new discovery helps fill a major gap in what scientists know of dinosaur evolutionary history. At least four specimens of Laquintasaura were uncovered together. This finding suggests that ornithischians may have practiced herd behavior early in their evolution. Until now, complex social behavior among ornithischians was confirmed only in dinosaurs of the Late Jurassic onward, dozens of millions of years after Laquintasaura was alive. In addition, Laquintasaura apparently lived near the equator, which past research suggested was inhospitable to dinosaurs. "Climate models had suggested that the equatorial regions may have been isolated from other regions by extensive deserts on either side, which may have acted as a barrier to prevent large animals reaching this region," Barrett said. "However, plant fossils from the area, and the discovery of Laquintasaura, suggest that the climate must have been capable of supporting at least some animals for at least part of the year, though it's unclear just how hospitable the area was all year round." A couple of fossil teeth the researchers discovered from another species "demonstrate that a meat-eating dinosaur was also present, but these teeth are the only evidence that we found for such an animal. No other fossils from other animal groups have been found," Barrett said. Many other details remain unknown about what the area was like when this dinosaur lived. "Some of the rocks in the general area of the discovery represent semiarid environments, while others indicate more swampy environments," Barrett said. "The climate would have been hot, but the amount of water would have varied through time." In the future, "it would be interesting to do more work on the specific environment that the bones come from, as well as the processes that concentrated the bones into the rich jumbled layer that was found," Barrett said. The scientists detailed their findings online Aug. 6 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Follow us @livescience, Facebook & Google+. Original article on Live Science.
