New Photos Reveal Colors in Ancient Amphipolis Tomb

Most of the earth around the two sphinxes found under the apse at the Casta Tumulus in Amphipolis has been removed, the Culture Ministry announced, revealing the upper register of a marble lintel with frescoes under the sphinxes’ base. The lintel mimics an Ionic lintel (epistyle) in paint, including red, blue and black colors. It rests on two Ionic capitals, also painted with the same colors, crowning the pilasters that form the door frame. The archaeological service is continuing the removal of the earth around the apse and the stones of the protecting wall below it, while Friday’s work will include stabilizing Thursday’s discoveries. The partially uncovered tomb, from the end of Alexander the Great‘s reign, has captivated public imagination, fueling wild speculation that it may contain rich treasures and the bones of an ancient celebrity. Head excavator: Tomb may not be looted The head of excavations at Amphipolis, Katerina Peristeri, has revealed her belief that the tomb has not been looted. The statement was made on Friday morning, during a SYRIZA delegation visit to the site. Peristeri voiced the opinion that the masonry blocks in front of the tomb entrance prevented the looting of the tomb. Citing the immensity of the monument, as well as the presence of the sphinxes and the lion, she believes that it is a globally unique structure. “There is no other such tomb in Greece, or the Balkans,” she said, adding that “We are struggling to do a correct job, and some time is necessary, maybe another month. Today we’re removing stone blocks and digging. We’re not many, but we’re good.” The SYRIZA delegation did not enter the excavation site but were briefed outside by Peristeri, as excavations are at a crucial point. So far, archaeologists have uncovered part of the late 4th Century BC tomb’s entrance, with two large stone sphinxes that stand as guards. Amphipolis Sphinxes’ wings found, Culture Minister says On Thursday, Culture Minister Konstantinos Tasoulas, referring to the Amphipolis excavations, stressed the need to promote Greek culture so that the country wins the place it deserves once again. “In response to these developments and the great interest expressed in Greece and abroad for this unique monument, it is worth considering again the issue of highlighting our culture, the pride that our culture gives us, the issue of protecting our culture along with its development, so that Greece can regain the place it deserves,” Tasoulas said. The Minister confirmed that parts of the Sphinxes’ wings were found, adding that excavation works continue and may take two weeks or more before drawing definite conclusions, saying that “in archaeology, only facts count, not speculations.” The total uncovering of the marble Sphinxes found at the Casta hill in Amphipolis, the discovery of a part of a Lion’s back, as well as a small part of the monument’s superstructure in the archaeological excavations were announced by the Culture Ministry on Wednesday.

One Week Postponement for Anti-racism Bill

The Parliament’s second summer session has postponed the discussion regarding the anti-racism bill for one week, after the request of Greece ‘s Justice Minister Charalambos Athanassiou. Meanwhile, former chamber secretary Takis Baltakos stated that this anti-racism bill is unconstitutional and “a legal monstrosity that will lead the country back to medieval obscurantism,” which caused a strong reaction from the government opposition. SYRIZA MP Vasiliki Katrivanou commented on Baltakos’ statement, saying that the anti-racism bill was in danger of “being remembered as the ‘frozen’ bill of the last years.” The anti-racism bill has caused great tension, conflicts and suffocating pressure. It is expected to be submitted to vote during the third summer session of the Greek Parliament. Despite the fact that the Greek Justice Minister has assured the Parliament that the new legislation will include genocides that have been recognized by the Greek Parliament, classifying them as an offense, there is still tension between the parties. In its announcement, PASOK spoke against the 38 New Democracy MPs who sent a letter to the Prime Minister requesting the inclusion of the Pontian and Asia Minor genocides in the anti-racism bill. “There is no point in these type of fake heroism acts,” stressed PASOK, noting that the inclusion of these genocides in the bill was obvious. Meanwhile, DIMAR stated: “The new postponement of the tabling of the anti-racism bill in the Parliament, reveals the intense efforts of New Democracy’s conservative enclaves to prevent the adoption of a modern anti-racism legislation.”

Illegal Immigrant Dead After Boat Sinks Near Tilos

A boat carrying illegal immigrants sank off the coast of the Greek island of Tilos, in the Aegean Sea, due to a fire. So far the Greek Coast Guard was able to recover the body of one dead passenger, while the Turkish Coast Guard safely rescued 81 illegal immigrants. According to Greek news, authorities were alerted about the incident shortly after 10am on Friday. However, when the Greek Coast Guard arrived in the area, the vessel was already in flames. Greek Navy ships were also involved in the operation, while it remains unknown how the Turkish Coast Guard vessel was involved in the case. It is, however, probable that the vessel was in the nearby area. At the moment, a Greek warship, a Super Puma rescue helicopter and a Greek Coast Guard boat are cruising along the borders to locate any other survivors.

Armed Robbery In Distomo – Hostage Freed

Greek authorities believe that known terrorist Paula Roupa, fugitive and wife of arrested terrorist Nikos Maziotis, may be involved in an armed robbery which took place at a bank in Distomo, Greece, around 2pm. Three people with face masks entered the National Bank of Greece branch in Distomo, holding assault rifles, just before closing time. They overpowered the staff and waited until they were able to open the bank’s two safes. Twenty minutes later, they left with 300,000 euros, taking a cashier with them as hostage. They used a Toyota Rav as their getaway car, which had been stolen two years ago, in May 2012. After driving for almost 5km, the three robbers burnt the car and fled by speedboat. They reached the Corinthian Gulf, off the coast of Xylokastro. Before going ashore, they threw the cashier in the sea, where he was forced to swim for almost an hour until he safely reached the shore. The perpetrators unsuccessfully attempted to burn the speedboat and in the end they fled the area, possibly using two vehicles, according to police investigation. The robbery resembles a crime that took place two years ago in Spetses, when Nikos Maziotis and Giorgos Petrakis escaped by speedboat and used two women as human shields. The Greek Anti-terrorism Unit is suspecting that the robbery was committed by Vasilis Paleokostas, a well-known criminal in Greece, and the team of terrorist Nikos Maziotis who is currently in jail.

Vodafone Buys 72.7% of HOL in Greece

Vodafone Group Plc has agreed to buy 72.7% of Greek broadband company Hellas Online SA (HOL) for 72.7 million euros and plans to make an offer for the rest of the company. Vodafone already owned 18.5% of the Athens-based company, giving it a 91.2% holding, Vodafone said in a statement today. The company is expanding its broadband offers across Europe as Chief Executive Officer Vittorio Colao bets on the popularity of bundled mobile and fixed services. The deal builds up Vodafone’s struggling southern Europe business, where service revenue dropped 26% in the last fiscal year. Vodafone bought the shares from Intracom Group and World Equities Investments Holdings SA. The deal gives HOL an equity value of 311 million euros, including debt, Vodafone said. Regulators still have to approve the deal. Vodafone has gone after similar companies in Germany and Spain and has committed to spending 19 billion pounds improving its network in the next two years. Vodafone agreed to buy Grupo Corporativo Ono SA in March for 7.5 billion euros, including debt, and Kabel Deutschland Holding AG last year for 10.5 billion euros. HOL is a broadband and fixed-line telephony provider in Greece with around 519,000 customers as of December 31, 2013, representing a market share of approximately 11%. Vodafone stated that it expects to achieve cost and capex synergies with an annual run-rate of 24 million euros before integration costs by the third full year post completion, equivalent to a net present value of approximately 135 million euros after integration costs. These synergies are expected to be realized from sharing network and IT infrastructure, savings on marketing and bill collections, and rationalization of overlapping functions. Vodafone Greece currently owns a 18.4% stake in HOL. The transaction is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2014, following which, Vodafone Greece would own 91.2% of HOL and be under an obligation to extend a mandatory takeover offer for the remaining shares.

Citizen Service Centers KEP to Renew Driving Licenses

Citizen Service Centers, known as KEP, will be able to assist citizens (both Greek and foreigners residing in Greece) in replacing their driving license. According to a decision published in the Government Gazette, drivers will be able to get new licenses or renew old ones at KEPs, therefore they will no longer have to queue up at the Transport Ministry. Foreigners living in Greece will be able to exchange the license from their home country at their local KEP if they are from the European Union, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea or Switzerland. At KEPs, citizens can be informed on all Public Administration matters and can apply to obtain official documentation from diverse state services. Thus they avoid time-consuming bureaucratic procedures and they can get all the papers they need in one stop. Citizens can get information by specialised KEP staff on all Public Administration questions. They can submit requests on 420 administrative processes and the staff fills in an electronic application on behalf of the citizen. Then the application is dispatched via the center to the appropriate public service where it is also officially stamped. The KEP staff member follows up the progress of any issuing of official documentation to its conclusion, thus saving citizens from unnecessary trips to public services. Upon completion of the process, citizens can receive their documents either from KEP or the service to which it was addressed, or alternatively, they can be sent by post or courier to their address.
