Berlin Addresses Rumor That It Is Kicking Refugees Out Of Hostels And Hotels
A Berlin government official has shot down a rumor that refugees are being removed from all hostels and hotels housing refugees in Berlin. "There must have been a misunderstanding," Silvia Kostner, spokeswoman for Berlin's State Office for Health and Social Affairs, told HuffPost Germany. "Only one hotel had to be evacuated because of fire protection. The [State Office, also known as LaGeSo,] had to escort the refugees in another place." Even after leaving most everything behind and making it to Western Europe, the journey is far from over. LaGeSo also denied that the woman who allegedly circulated the rumor, Marianna Ihle, who was reported as being a state official, is an employee of theirs. Almost 800,000 refugees have arrived in Germany so far this year to escape war and conflict. People leave the Middle East and cross into Europe via Turkey, Greece and Italy. They have been making their way to western Europe in search of a fresh start. Yet even after leaving their lives behind, the journey is far from over. _This is a developing story, check back for updates._ _ALSO ON HUFFPOST:_ -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Chilling Photos From Greece's Shores Capture The Dark Side Of The Refugee Crisis
A humanitarian tragedy has unfolded on the Greek islands in the past few months. It extends form war-stricken Syria to European countries, has a lot of faces, all of them painful. Hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have arrived on Greece's shores this year, hoping to make their way from there to other countries in Europe. According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 500 people have died while trying to make the crossing across the Aegean Sea from Turkey to the Greek islands this year. Photography has proven a powerful tool to capture the depths of the humanitarian crisis. The images below, taken on the island of Lesbos by Aris Messinis, chief photographer for Agence France Presse in Athens, were published as news broke that cemeteries on the island were running out of space to bury the refugees. Messinis zoomed in on the graves of a man and a little child who drowned while crossing. Two pieces of marble placed on the graves read “Unknown” and “Unidentified little child.” Below, the placards list the dates when the bodies were found. Nobody knows who they were. _This story was originally published on HuffPost Greece and was translated into English. _ > READ MORE ON THE REFUGEE CRISIS IN GREECE: > > - The Artist Telling Greeks' Stories Through Playmobil > - Greek Islander: It's Hard To Live With Death Every Day > - 7 Volunteers Whose Lives Were Changed By Refugees -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
