Italy helps rescue 2,600 migrants from sea in 24 hours

[Migrants arrive by the Italian coastguard vessel Peluso in the Sicilian harbour of Augusta]Some 2,000 migrants were rescued off the Libyan coast from 14 rubber dinghies and one larger boat in salvage operations by the Italian navy and coastguard, the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres and an Irish navy vessel, the coastguard said. More than 31,000 migrants have reached Italy by boat so far this year, slightly fewer than in the same period of 2015. Humanitarian organisations say the sea route between Libya and Italy is now the main route for asylum seekers heading for Europe, after an EU deal on migrants with Turkey dramatically slowed the flow of people reaching Greece.

There's good news for America's low-wage workers

[minimum wage]REUTERS/Noah Berger While income inequality has been a structural issue for some time, there are signs that low-income Americans with jobs are now getting some relief. In notes this past week, Bank of America Merril Lynch (BAML), JPMorgan, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta all laid out good news regarding the paychecks of low-wage workers. In a note on the growth of subprime auto loans, BAML economists Emanuella Enenajor and Lisa Berlin showed reason for optimism based on wage-growth metrics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' employment report. "Finally, the lower-income consumer, the demographic segment most likely comprising subprime borrowers, has been experiencing strong income growth," the note read. "Average wage growth of the bottom 10% and bottom 20% of employment categories has been accelerating at twice the pace of all other jobs." [Screen Shot 2016 05 23 at 10.55.01 AM]REUTERS/Noah Berger JPMorgan's Robert Mellman used the weekly earnings report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to break out the improvement in income for those in the bottom one-tenth of earners. Here's Mellman's breakdown (emphasis added): Usual Weekly Earnings indicates that median earnings for those at the first decile (10% on the earnings distribution) had been declining irregularly relative to median earnings (50% on the earnings distribution) through the prior expansion and through the first few years of the current expansion. BUT THE LOWER-WAGE WORKERS HAVE BEEN REGAINING SOME OF THE LOST GROUND OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. The gains have not been dramatic. But the declining trend was reversed and modest gains have been realized. Basically, the gap between what middle- and low-income workers make had been getting wider and wider between 2004 and 2013. Now, that trend is starting to reverse. Additionally, the study showed that since late 2014, low-wage occupations have seen a marked improvement in wages as well. [Screen Shot 2016 05 23 at 10.58.55 AM]REUTERS/Noah Berger Additionally, data from the Atlanta Fed outlines that this catch-up is most likely not because of declining middle-class wage growth but rather an actual increase in wages for low-wage workers. A blog post by Ellyn Terry, an economic analyst for the Atlanta Fed, presented the case that, based on the Atlanta Fed Wage Growth Tracker, middle-income workers have seen improving wage-growth trends, and low-wage workers have also been beneficiaries. "Wage growth overall has moved higher over the past year, driven primarily by those working in low- and middle-wage jobs," Terry said. Based on this, one can assume that the shrinking gap between median and low-wage earners is being closed by increasing wages at the bottom tenth rather than declining wages for the median. Now, to be sure, the bump in the minimum wage in various cities and states is a contributing factor, but since these measures are aggregates for the entire US, it is safe to assume that the improvement is from more than that one cause. Based on all these measures, it appears that workers at the lower end of the income scale are getting some relief. The tallest place on Earth is nowhere near Mt. Everest

[mount everest plane crash]Wikimedia Commons Whenever the question is asked, "what is the highest point on planet Earth?" people naturally assume that the answer is Mt. Everest. In fact, so embedded is the notion that Mt. Everest is the highest point on the world that most people wouldn't even think twice before answering. And even when we talk of other huge mountains in the Solar System (like Mars' Olympus Mons), we invariably compare them to Mt. Everest. But in truth, Everest does not hold the record for being the highest point on Earth. Due to the nature of our planet — which is not shaped like a perfect sphere but an oblate spheroid (i.e. a sphere that bulges at the center) — points that are located along the equator are farther away than those located at the poles. When you factor this in, Everest and the Himalayas find themselves falling a bit short! EARTH AS A SPHERE [earth spheroid illustration]Wikimedia Commons The understanding that Earth is spherical is believed to have emerged during the 6th century BCE in ancient Greece. While Pythagoras is generally credited with this theory, it is equally likely that it emerged on its own as a result of travel between Greek settlements — where sailors noticed changes in what stars were visible at night based on differences in altitudes. By the 3rd century BCE, the idea of a spherical Earth began to become articulated as a scientific matter. By measuring the angle cast by shadows in different geographical locations, Eratosthenes — a Greek astronomer from Hellenistic Libya (276 - 194 BCE) — was able to estimate Earth's circumference within a 5% — 15% margin of error. With the rise of the Roman Empire and their adoption of Hellenistic astronomy, the view of a spherical Earth became widespread throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. This knowledge was preserved thanks to the monastic tradition and Scholasticism during the Middle Ages. By the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution (mid 16th — late 18th centuries), the geological and heliocentric views of Earth became accepted as well. With the advent of modern astronomy, precise methods of measurement, and the ability to view Earth from space, our models of its true shape and dimensions have come to be refined considerably. MODERN MODELS OF THE EARTH To clarify matters a little, the Earth is neither a perfect sphere, nor is it flat. Sorry Galileo, and sorry Flat-Earthers (not sorry!), but it's true. As already noted, it is an oblate spheroid, which is a result of the rotation of the Earth. Basically, its spin results in a flattening at the poles and a bulging at its equatorial. This is true for many bodies in the Solar System (such as Jupiter and Saturn) and even rapidly-spinning stars like Altair. Based on some of the latest measurements, it is estimated that Earth has a polar radius (i.e. from the middle of Earth to the poles) of 6,356.8 km, whereas its equatorial radius (from the center to the equator) is 6,378.1 km. In short, objects located along the equator are 22 km further away from the center of the Earth (geocenter) than objects located at the poles. Naturally, there are some deviations in the local topography where objects located away from the equator are closer or father away from the center of the Earth than others in the same region. The most notable exceptions are the Mariana Trench — the deepest place on Earth, at 10,911 m (35,797 ft) below local sea level — and Mt. Everest, which is 8,848 meters (29,029 ft) above local sea level. However, these two geological features represent a very minor variation when compared to Earth's overall shape — 0.17% and 0.14% respectively. HIGHEST POINT ON EARTH [Volcán Chimborazo, El Taita Chimborazo]Wikimedia Commons To be fair, Mt. Everest is _one_ of the highest points on Earth, with its peak ascending to an altitude of 8,848 meters (29,029 ft) above sea level. However, due to its location within the Himalayan Mountain Chain in Nepal, some 27° and 59 minutes north of the equator, it is actually lower than mountains located in Ecuador. It is here, where the land is dominated by the Andes mountain chain, that the highest point on planet Earth is located. Known as Mt. Chimborazo, the peak of this mountain reaches an attitude of 6,263.47 meters (20,549.54 ft) above sea level. But because it is located just 1° and 28 minutes south of the equator (at the highest point of the planet's bulge), it receives a natural boost of about 21 km. In terms of how far they are from the geocenter, Everest lies at a distance of 6,382 kilometers (3,965 miles) from the center of the Earth while Chimborazo reaches to a distance of 6,384 kilometers (3,967 miles). That's a difference of about 3.2 km (2 miles), which may not seem like much. But if we're talking about rankings and titles, it pays to be specific! Naturally, there are those who would stress that Mt. Everest is still the tallest mountain, measured from base to peak. Unfortunately, here too, they would be incorrect. That prize goes to Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano located on the island of Hawaii. Measuring 10,206 meters (33,484 ft) from base to summit, it is the highest mountain in the world. However, since its base is several thousand meters below seat level, we only see the top 4,207 m (13,802 ft) of it. [Mauna Kea from the ocean]Wikimedia Commons But if one were to say that Everest was tallest mountain based on its _altitude_, they would be correct. In terms of its summit's elevation above sea level, Everest is ranked as being as the tallest mountain in the world. And when it comes to the sheer difficulty of ascending it, Everest will always be ranked no. 1, both in the records books and in the hearts of climbers everywhere! This high school has no classrooms and spends each semester in a different country

[think global school]By the time seniors graduate from THINK Global School, they've visited more countries than most people will see in their entire lifetimes. That's because THINK doesn't operate like a traditional high school. Though its headquarters are in New York City, the independent school doesn't have a physical campus. Instead, classes take place exclusively in foreign countries — three per year, to be exact — in order to give kids a world-class education that actually uses the whole world as a classroom. [think global school]THINK Global SchoolLee Carlton, an IT analyst at THINK, says each academic year offers a diverse set of experiences. He points to the 2014-2015 curriculum in particular. "At the start of the year, our students spent a term studying environmental biology in Costa Rica.... In the spring, we spent a term in Greece, where our students embarked on a week-long reenactment of Homer's epic poem 'The Odyssey,'" he says. THINK bases its pedagogy on research that suggests people build the greatest empathy for others when they can experience a taste of their world. Since the school was founded in 2010, its mission has been to create "the next generation of change makers," Carlton says. "We truly feel that the best way to accomplish this is to open our students' eyes to the world through firsthand experiences in a diverse range of countries," he explains. It's a model that earned the school a spot on Tech Insider's ranking of the most innovative schools in the country. THINK's first class, a small band of 15 kids from 11 countries, visited Sweden in the fall of 2010. Carlton says the country was a safe, modern location to introduce the school's program; plus, the school already had a host facility in Stockholm. Since then, THINK has taken its students to every continent except Antarctica. "Each term is an opportunity for our students to explore the issues that are important to the people who call our host country home," Carlton says. Over the last few years, students have searched for howler monkeys and collected samples of endangered floral species in the rainforests of Costa Rica; gone cross-country skiing near the Arctic Circle after learning about indigenous Lappland cultures; spoken with imams and participated in a Model UN event in Bosnia; and sailed the Ionian sea, hopping between the Greek isles. [THINK Global School]THINK Global SchoolIn each location, they learn about the history, local culture, and political struggles of the region. "Take the migrant crisis, for instance," Carlton says. "With our last three terms taking place in Europe, including one in Greece, which is at the heart of the crisis, our students have found themselves thrust into the situation themselves." THINK students also learn more formal subjects like math and science, and in 11th grade they begin preparing for the International Baccalaureat exams they'll use to get into college. The school says its students routinely test above the average. [THINK Global School]THINK Global SchoolBut molding citizens of the world isn't cheap. THINK charges $79,000 for a year of education — a cost that includes tuition, room and board, planned activities, and smaller fees like insurance and support costs. All students also receive their own MacBook, iPhone, and iPad upon enrollment. Of course, for families that can afford the high price tag, the experiences are unparalleled. Students enrolled for the 2016-2017 year will first travel to Canada, Morocco, and Peru, where they'll learn about sustainability, nomadic culture, and ancient Incan history. That catalog of experiences creates a student body with a deep appreciation for the planet's diversity and an awareness of inequality and systemic problems in countries throughout the world. "Learning firsthand from those affected by these issues breeds empathy," Carlton says. "This, more than any other factor, shapes our students' global perspective and influences their desire to pursue college and post-college opportunities that put them in a position to give back and create change." EU says asylum-seeker's appeal shows deal to limit migration is legal

By Gabriela Baczynska and Karolina Tagaris BRUSSELS/ATHENS (Reuters) - The European Union said on Monday a Syrian asylum seeker's successful appeal against deportation to Turkey proved the bloc's deal with Ankara to limit migration was legal, while rights groups said the ruling exposed its "fundamental flaws". A Syrian national last week won the second and final appeal to Greece's asylum committee, which ruled the person would not be safe if returned to Turkey under an accord obliging Ankara to take back refugees and migrants who use people-smuggling gangs to reach Greek islands by boat from the nearby Turkish coast.
