Violent Protests Mark Anniversary Of Police Killing In Greece
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A march through central Athens to mark the sixth anniversary of the fatal police shooting of an unarmed teenager quickly turned violent Saturday, as marchers damaged store fronts and bus stations, and set fire to clothes looted from a shop. Clashes also broke out between police and demonstrators marching through the northern city of Thessaloniki. At night, police fired tear gas and stun grenades after a crowd of marchers beat up two plainclothes policemen there. No casualties were immediately reported in either city. The marches are commemorating the Dec. 6, 2008, police killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in the capital, which led to two weeks of the most violent rioting Greece had seen in decades. On Saturday, about 5,000 people were marching in Athens, passing the Greek Parliament and heading toward the spot where Grigoropoulos was killed, police said. At one point during, people broke into a Zara clothes shop, took racks of clothes into the street and burned them. Clashes took in the Athens neighborhood of Exarchia, a haven for extreme leftists and anarchists, where Grigoropoulos was killed. Police cordoned off the neighborhood's central square, firing tear gas and pepper spray. Police also had two vehicles armed with water cannons. The marches come at a time when nearly nightly violent protests are being held by supporters of one of Grigoropoulos' friends, jailed anarchist and convicted bank robber Nikos Romanos, 21. He was present when Grigoropoulos was killed and is now on a hunger strike, demanding prison leave to attend lectures after he passed university entrance exams. Romanos, currently hospitalized under police guard, has been on the hunger strike since last month and doctors have said his health is failing. He was jailed with three young men following a February 2013 bank robbery in which they took a hostage as they tried to escape. Police released doctored mug shots of the four at the time to remove signs of severe facial bruising caused during their arrests, leading to an outcry at the time. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will meet with Romanos' parents on Monday morning, following a request made through their lawyer on Saturday, the government said. __ Costas Kantouris contributed to this report from Thessaloniki.

Grigoropoulos Anniversary: Riots in Athens and Other Greek Cities
Riots and clashes with the police in several major cities in Greece have marked the anniversary of the killing of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman. In Athens, where the biggest demonstration rally took place, it was preceded by attacks against police on Stournari street in Exarcheia. Anarchists threw rocks and molotov cocktails at police vans. Skirmishes were reported in several Exarcheia spots. Later on, as the rally was in progress, several protesters wearing hoods broke store windows and traffic cameras, entering stores and throwing molotov cocktails. Several store fronts were burned on Panepistimiou street. As the mass of protesters approached Syntagma Square, more molotov cocktails were thrown at police and shop windows. Groups were separated from the main body of the rally and broke store fronts on side streets. After the protesters dispersed in front of the parliament building at Syntagma Square, the battlefield was transferred to Exarcheia Square and side streets where there were multiple arsons of buildings and cars and fights with the riot police. The National Technical University of Athens (Polytechneio) was under siege, while dozens of suspects were arrested. In Agrinio, the protest rally held in the center of the city ended with protesters throwing rocks at police, cafes and stores causing minor damages. Three people were arrested and taken for questioning. Ιn Patra, anarchists used molotov cocktails and catapults to attack police after burning trash containers. The riot squad answered with tear gas and flares. Protesters threw a motorcycle policeman from his bike using a catapult. In Thessaloniki the protest rally started under heavy police surveillance. However, protesters attacked police forces with molotov bombs and stones. Police responded with tear gas and flares. Many damages were reported to cars and shop windows, while serious clashes between rioters and police took place in front of the American Consulate and a store was burned in the center of the city.

Our final four is too close to call at this point, although I suspect it won’t include Mark and Karen, who have been in the bottom two enough times to consider a timeshare. Alexandros Grigoropoulos: The Killing that Shook Greece
Today is the sixth anniversary of the killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman, that triggered the most violent riots Athens has seen in recent years. It was a little before 9:00 on the evening of December 6, 2008, when Grigoropoulos and his friends were sitting in a corner at Exarcheia and exchanged swear words with two policemen in a patrol car that was passing by. A little later, the two policemen, Epaminondas Korkoneas and Vasilis Saraliotis returned to the scene on foot. The former, pulled out his gun and shot Grigoropoulos. The young man died a few minutes later in his friend’s lap. His friend was Nikos Romanos. The two policemen returned to the Exarcheia police station and reported that they had been attacked by anarchists. They didn’t report the shooting. In a few hours, hundreds of young people took to the streets of Exarcheia and started burning trash containers, cars, bus stops. Soon more fires broke out all over Athens as more and more people clashed with the riot police (MAT). All the pent-up youth frustration and the feeling that this was a police killing that would probably go unpunished generated a guerilla war on the streets of central Athens. Rallies against police brutality took place in several cities in Greece, followed by battles with the police. But Athens was literally set on fire. Several embassies issued warnings for the protection of their citizens and pictures of the burning city spread throughout the world. BBC talked about an insurrection. Efforts on behalf of Korkoneas to justify his crime and his defense attorney to put the blame on the behavior of Grigoropoulos added more fuel to the fire and more riots ensued. The justice ministry and Greek police decided to transfer the trial to Amfissa so that there would be no more riots in Athens. The mixed jury in Amfissa decided that Korkoneas was guilty of premeditated murder and the policeman received a life sentence. Saraliotis received ten years for accessory to murder. Despite the policeman’s punishment, December 6 has been unofficially established among anarchists as remembrance day for Alexandros Grigoropoulos and every year since is marked with clashes with the police and burnings. This year’s anniversary is also marked with the hunger strike of Grigoropoulos’ friend, Nikos Romanos. The 21-year-old wanted to avenge his friend’s death by starting an armed anarchist group. In an attempt to finance their struggle, they tried to rob a bank. The robbery failed, Romanos and his accomplices were arrested and now Nikos Romanos is in prison. Since November 10, the young man went on a hunger strike after authorities refused to grant him educational leave to study. The justice ministry proposed distance learning courses through the internet, but Romanos refused and he is still on a hunger strike. Meanwhile, anarchists and leftists have rallied in support of Romanos by occupying public buildings and schools and clashing with the police. Yiannis Michailidis, incarcerated member of the Romanos gang who also refuses food, sent an open letter to Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou saying, “I am very hungry. If you kill Nikos, only your throat would sate my hunger.” For today’s anniversary of Grigoropoulos’ murder, 18,500 policemen are standing by.
