The Guardian view on Europe’s new politics: all change

Emmanuel Macron’s victory in France introduced a new political entity. Progressives elsewhere on the continent should take heart A tide of political change is sweeping across Europe, with France the latest and arguably most spectacular example of a quest for fresh new faces and platforms. Old structures born from the continent’s postwar political landscape have worn thin or are coming loose. A continent that was beginning to adapt to the idea of technological and economic change finds it must also address a transformation that is intensely political. Emmanuel Macron’s victory last weekend marked the emergence of an entirely new entity on the French political stage. There have been pre-echoes of similar developments elsewhere in Europe. A new normal arises, in which once tightly held beliefs and clear left-right divides are dissolved. Voters want something new that doesn’t fit old, failed patterns – and it is not only extremists who can respond to this demand. Though Mr Macron is not quite the outsider that he likes to portray, there is no better illustration of this than his La République En Marche, a self-proclaimed “neither right nor left” movement whose rise has been meteoric. It seeks to bridge liberal values in economics (a traditional feature of the right) with liberal values on social and identity matters (a characteristic of the left). Its success may largely depend on his capacity to convince Germany that an overhaul of eurozone governance through a common budget and finance minister is possible, if France introduces the structural reforms he envisages. Early signs are that Berlin might be amenable, but very cautiously; nothing will be clear until after the German elections in September. Interestingly, Mr Macron made himself an ally of Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister who fell foul of Germany’s hardline approach. Mr Varoufakis recalled that Mr Macron was rare in “understanding what the eurozone finance ministers and the troika were doing to our government and, more importantly, to our people, was detrimental to the interests of France and the European Union”. Radical Storytelling Through Virtual Reality At The Define American Film Festival

Right now, we need to share our stories more than ever. It will be radical cultural resistance through art and expression that will help heal the fissures that are expanding with the change in our country’s demographic makeup. Our second annual Define American Film Festival (#DAFF), taking place at the Harvey B. Gantt for African American Arts + Culture, this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Charlotte North Carolina, is based on that philosophy. We’ll be sharing stories like “Dolores,” “White People” and “Forbidden: Undocumented and Queer in Rural America” that illuminate the intersectionality of issues ranging from immigration to race to LGBTQ and women’s rights. None of these issues exist in a vacuum. They overlap, intersect and clash in ways that, without the unifying salve of a shared story, will continue to separate us from one another. We have seen, firsthand, the power that a well-told story can have to change someone’s perspective and open minds. After all, what could be more powerful than seeing the the world through the eyes of another? Luckily, as technology advances, it brings us more opportunities to connect through story. That’s why at this year’s DAFF, we have partnered with RYOT (owned by AOL/HuffPost) to embrace a new, powerful storytelling medium: virtual reality. VR is an invaluable tool for those of us in the social impact entertainment space because it quite literally places you inside someone else’s world, often in an environment that you may never otherwise have a chance to experience. At DAFF, we’ll be sharing three extraordinary VR experiences: Welcome to Aleppo: One does not flee from their home, unless their home looks like this. For three minutes, stand on the streets of Aleppo, Syria, a city that has been at the center of a civil war for four years. Collected by RYOT’s World Editor, Christian Stephen, this is the first 360 virtual reality footage gathered from inside a war zone. Hear the shots of snipers echo through the streets and see what life remains in this shell of a city. For My Son: In immersive VR, RYOT and the award-winning filmmakers behind Salam Neighbor have joined forces with UN OCHA to tell the story of a young Syrian restarting his life in Amman, Jordan. Through a heartfelt letter from father to son, challenge the misconception that refugees are a burden and experience the refugee journey from the bombed out buildings of Aleppo to the historical sites of Jordan. The Crossing: RYOT and HuffPost present “The Crossing,” a virtual reality film and immersive reporting series hosted by Susan Sarandon chronicling the refugee crisis as it unfolds in Greece. The shores of the Mediterranean see thousands of refugees every day who arrive on small boats, evidence for which is seen everywhere in massive piles of discarded life vests. Most of the arrivals are fleeing from Syria and Afghanistan in search of safety, economic stability, and a better life. Festival attendees will be able to step into other worlds, and we are pleased to be inviting local Charlotte public school students to attend and experience it for themselves. DAFF is our own act of cultural intervention and resistance. We’re excited to be able to continue our media and culture work with VR: an incredibly powerful tool that can be used by the film world, social justice worlds and educators to expose new realities and open hearts and minds. DAFF Virtual Reality Schedule: Thursday, May 11: 6:00 PM - 6:45 PM Friday, May 12 1:45 PM - 2:15 PM 7:00 PM - 7:45 PM Saturday, May 13 12:30 PM - 12:45 PM 6:00 PM - 7:45 PM For more information on DAFF, including the full festival schedule, visit: https://defineamerican.com/filmfest/. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Bank of England governor Mark Carney: real wages will fall this year

UK central bank warns that households will be squeezed this year as inflation rises faster than previously forecast * Carney: Real wages will fall this year * Carney: Inflation better than unemployment * UK interest rates unchanged after 7-1 vote * Bank warns that higher inflation will hit households * Growth forecast for 2017 cut 4.46pm BST Over in Athens, Greek finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos has felt the full force of protests today with communist-aligned demonstrators occupying his office ahead of next week’s vote on yet more austerity measures demanded by creditors in return for fresh bailout funds to avert default. Helena Smith reports: Barging their way into the finance ministry on Syntagma Square, scores of communist-aligned protestors hung a massive banner from the building’s façade exhorting Greeks to “rise up” and participate in the general strike that will coincide with parliament legislating further cuts and tax increases in exchange for emergency bailout loans next week. The protest, which kicks off a week of work stoppages, strikes and street demonstrations ahead of the vote, kept Tsakalotos locked out of his sixth-floor office for most of the day. Standing in front of the finance ministry, Yannis Hiotelis, a retired bank employee said his pension had been already been cut 60 percent. “How do they expect us to survive?” he asked of prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ leftist-led government. “Austerity only leads to unhappiness, disillusionment, bitterness and ultimately friction. We are talking about outright pillage. This government has made a mockery of its own so called leftist politics.” The protest came as the International Monetary Fund appeared to roll back on speculation that it would sign up to the Greek bailout programme before a comprehensive debt deal had been found for the debt-stricken country. Greece is expected to be the focus of talks when the G7 meet over the next few days. 4.26pm BST Joshua Mahony, market analyst at IG, said: Today has been all about the UK, with a batch of hugely uninspiring data points giving way to a surprisingly volatile Bank of England meeting. The FTSE has suffered alongside its European and US counterparts, with a relatively stable day turning sour this afternoon. Gold producers Fresnillo and Randgold Resources are the top performers of the day, and it looks like investors are battening down the hatches for now. The downturn in UK economic data over recent months has been there for all to see, yet this morning provided a perfect overview of how British industry is struggling of late. Negative construction output, manufacturing production and industrial production in March goes to show how tough the current business environment is for firms. However, probably the most damning number was the trade balance for goods which showed that despite the boost of a weaker pound, we are seeing consumers continue to focus on imports over domestic products.
