Coming out of a long Eurozone summit, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that Greece won a hard deal but it is one that will secure the country’s place in the Eurozone and will help the Greek economy recover. “We gave a tough battle and we fought until the end for a deal that would help Greece stand on its feet… We took a hard decision and we took the responsibility of this decision… It was one of the most extreme deals ever signed. It was hard, but we avoided the transfer of Greek state wealth abroad, we avoided the financial asphyxiation plan, and finally we managed to secure the commitment for debt restructuring” Tsipras said. “It was a battle that the Greek people won. We must fight to win our dignity again. Through our fight, the Greek people sent a message of dignity to all of Europe… The decision we took keeps Greece in financial and economic stability while providing the prospect of recovery… We managed to secure the support of the Greek banking system… We knew however that implementing the deal would be very hard… Some of the measures have recessionary form but the 35-billion-euro economic development package that we got will give international markets the certainty that a Grexit is a thing of the past,” the Greek prime minister continued. “The majority of Greek people will support the effort we made to return to growth. They will acknowledge that we gave a hard fight, but it was a fight for fairness… Now all the financial burdens will be distributed with social justice in mind… Now the oligarchs who in the past were protected by previous governments will pay their share… No longer only the poor will pay, the oligarchs will pay as well… Greece needs reforms against the oligarchs who benefited from the crisis,” Tsipras said.
