American Website Reveals 12 Basic Facts About Greek People

“Greece has rich ancient history and Mediterranean beauty, but lately it’s been in the news because of its economic upheaval,” American news website Business Insider referred in its recent article entitled “12 fascinating facts about the majority of Greeks.” Although Greek voters were recently divided during the July 5 referendum over their country’s international creditor’s bailout package, the majority of them still share 12 common characteristics, according to the website. 1. Voting is compulsory in Greece for all Greek citizens from their 18th year of age, however during the most recent elections only 64% of registered voters appeared to practice their right. 2. Greeks adore their homeland, with 71% of the whole population having a very positive opinion about it. They also consider themselves to be the most hardworking people in Europe. 3. The life expectancy for the average Greek is 81 years. 4. Greece and Korea are among the very few countries that like Russia. 5. Greeks also love China. 6. But Greeks do not like German Chancellor Angela Merkel. 7. Greek men between 19 and 45 years of age are obliged according to Greek law to serve at least nine months of military service. 8. 60% of Greeks do not smoke any cigarette in a week. 9. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Greeks believe that their quality of life is low. 10. Greeks are disappointed with the European Union, but they prefer to stay inside the Euro. 11. 69% of Greek men and 68% of Greek women have graduated from high school. 12. Both adults with a disposable income in the top 20% and adults with a disposable income in the bottom 20% rate their healthcare system as either “good” or “very good.”
