Poll: 7 in 10 Greeks Want the Euro at Any Cost

The majority of Greeks, 7 out of 10, choose to stay in the Eurozone at any cost, according to a latest opinion poll conducted by GPO. The poll was presented on Mega television on Monday night, showing that 69.7 percent of Greeks want to stay in the euro and 28.9 are in favor of a national currency, while 68.5 would vote in favor of the European common currency and 27.6 percent would choose the drachma if the government were to hold a referendum. When asked if they would prefer to stay in the Eurozone even if that requires that the government implements harsh austerity measures, 56.2 percent of participants said they would choose the euro. To the same question, 35.4 percent of Greeks said they would prefer that the country goes bankrupt and exits the Eurozone. When asked, 45.6 percent of SYRIZA voters would choose bankruptcy over an agreement tied to austerity measures, while 43.3 percent of them would want to stay in the Eurozone even if that meant continuation of austerity. Also, the majority of SYRIZA voters (55.9 percent) would like Greece to stay in the Eurozone at any cost, while 41.8 percent are against that notion. If a referendum over Greece’s stay in the Eurozone were to be held today, 53.8 of SYRIZA voters would choose the euro, while 39.5 percent of them would like to change to the national currency. Regarding the European Union, 57.5 percent of participants believe that the EU does not cater to Greek interests but Greece should remain a member, otherwise we will be isolated. Only 18.8 percent believe that the European Union means progress and we should remain a member, while 21.3 percent believe that we should leave the union.
