By Lorenzo Ferrari Corruption costs around 120 billion euros each year to the EU economy and surveys show that the problem has worsened in recent years. In February 2014, the European Commission devoted an entire report to an in-depth analysis of corruption in Europe, based on data from the Eurobarometer. Some of this data was used by Niall McCarthy, from Statista, to create this map illustrating the perception of corruption within the EU. Specifically, the map shows the proportion of citizens who think that corruption affects their daily life in each member state. The percentage is very high in Greece and Spain (63% of citizens interviewed), while the phenomenon is least experienced in Denmark (3%), France and Germany (6%). In general, the map reveals that corruption is an acutely felt phenomenon in southern Europe.
