Greek PM Tsipras Rejects Creditors’ Suggestions for Austerity after Meeting EC President Juncker

President Juncker received Greek Prime Minister Tsipras today at 20:30 CET to discuss the state of play in the negotiations between Greece and its international partners. The private meeting, on the personal invitation of President Juncker, was followed by a working dinner and a press junket. The European Commission, the executive arm of the 28-member European Union, is one Greece’s creditors along with the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank. Talking to reporters, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras noted that the discussions were very productive, but his government cannot accept many of the austerity proposals the creditors brought to the negotiations table. “There are points that no one would consider as a base for discussion, but the talks will continue in the coming days.” He said that “Greece cannot consider further cuts in pensions, or raising the VAT in electricity bills by 10%” as it was suggested by Greece’s creditors in search of more funds for the cash-strapped Greek state. All parties agreed that the negotiations for Greece’s debt problem will continue hoping to find a fast solution.
