Holy Thursday is the saddest day of the Holy Week and in the Greek Orthodox Church the events of Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth are revived. Before his sacrifice for the salvation of men, Jesus wanted to dine with his disciples one last time. The Last Supper took place in a house in Jerusalem, where Jesus and his disciples secretly gathered to share their meal. Jesus took a basin of water and washed the feet of his disciples. This was a slave’s work at the time. Later, Jesus wanted to teach his disciples, and through them, all humankind, to be humble and serve their fellow men. In many areas across Greece, a representation of Jesus Christ’s actions takes place on the morning of Holy Thursday. During the Last Supper, after Judas had left, Jesus handed the Sacrament of the Eucharist to his disciples. The mockery and insults that people addressed to Jesus as he was being lifted on the cross is tragically depicted through the mournful hymns and the words of the Gospel. Women gather in churches across the country to mourn for Jesus.
