Former PM Simitis and PASOK Officials Called to Testify in Corruption Trial

Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, and former Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) members who were active during the period that Akis Tsochatzopoulos served as the Greek National Defense Minister were called to testify before the Court of Appeal for feloniesvon April 29. The court’s hearing on the armaments procurement programs case examines if former defense minister Tsochatzopoulos had received bribes in order to favor arm deals from specific companies. The subpoena to former members of KYSEA has been a standing request of Akis Tsochatzopoulos since the beginning of the judicial investigation. Tsochatzopoulos also argues that the decision on the disputed contracts for submarines and the TOR M1 was a government decision, therefore he claims it was made by all KYSEA members. In addition, the court also decided to call as witnesses the former PASOK-government ministers, Yiannos Papantoniou and Vasso Papandreou, while the court rejected the application to suspend the sentence execution which would led to the release of Tsochatzopoulos’ wife Viki Stamatis, and his accountant Frosso Lampropoulou.
