‘To Potami’ Leader Theodorakis: Poker with Presidential Election Must Stop

To “stop playing poker” with such an importance issue as the election of the new President of the Hellenic Republic, called Greece’s two main parties, governing New Democracy and main opposition SYRIZA, “To Potami” party leader Stavros Theodorakis, exiting a meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Wednesday. Theodorakis underlined that the country’s two main political forces must work together to find a commonly accepted solution regarding the upcoming election that is scheduled to be held on February 2015. Addressing journalists after the meeting at the government headquarters was completed, Theodorakis highlighted that “this instability has to end. The people who are claiming power, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras, must come to an understanding and find a solution with mutual concessions,” declaring his party’s desire for the current Parliament to vote for the President of the Hellenic Republic, avoiding the possibility of early elections. Regarding the Constitution revision, “To Potami” leader said that this should happen now and include changes in the immunity enjoyed by the political system. Furthermore, the new Constitution should include, according to Theodorakis, changes in the electoral law, an amendment to make electoral districts smaller, a beneficial “patriotic solution” for the country’s debt, as well as elections in November 2015. Asked about the Prime Minister’s stance regarding the date of the next elections, Theodorakis said that Samaras “insists elections should be held in 2016,” although he added that the Greek Premier appeared committed to the Constitution revision during their meeting. Concluding, Theodorakis also revealed that he will attend a meeting with main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras.
