EU’s Schulz: Europe will Help Greece Find Rich Tax Evaders
European Union member-states will take part in the Greek government’s efforts to recover its fiscal assets that have been taken out of the country, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said in an interview to “Parapolitika” newspaper published on Saturday. ” Greece will have both the EU and governments by its side if it gets to work and fights tax evasion and tax fraud as its an absolute priority, ” Schulz was quoted as saying. “Rich Greeks must assume a greater burden not just for ethical reasons, but also because this will contribute to the increase of tax revenues. This would be an excellent way to put money in the economy and social services without putting an end to efforts for fiscal health,” he added. (source: Parapolitika)

Believe it or Not, a Smoke-Free Village In Crete!
It is hard to think of a place in Greece where there is no chain-smoking and most social activities are not done underneath a cloud of smoke. Yet, there is a village on the island of Crete where no one has smoked since the 1970s! The residents of Skoteino village quit smoking back in the 1970s and ever since no one can smoke there, according to a Creatpost.gr report. Skoteino means dark in Greek and that is something that the villagers’ lungs will never be. Skoteino is 22.5 kilometers east of the bustling city of Iraklio. The reason Skoteino is smoke-free is very simple: “We do not smoke and our children do not smoke either, because we made them realize that smoking is an unhealthy habit,” Zacharias Moudatsakis, a village resident, says. If a smoker visits the village, he simply can’t smoke because cigarettes are nowhere to be found there. There is no kiosk or convenience store selling cigarettes in Skoteino. Smokers who had left the village before the unanimous decision to make Skoteino smoke-free almost four decades ago, quit smoking after they came back.
Greek FinMin: There’s No Plan B, Only Armageddon
Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told The Guardian that Greece has no Plan B if negotiations with its creditors fail. “We constantly hear, ‘if you don’t sign on the dotted line there is going to be Armageddon’. My answer is ‘let it happen!’ There is no fall-back plan. That is my plan B,” Varoufakis said in the interview. On Monday, there is a crucial meeting with euro zone finance ministers where Greece has to present a viable proposal on the state debt issue. When the reporter asked him what would happen, the Greek finance minister replied: “Well, that is like asking me what happens if a comet strikes planet Earth. I have no idea. None!” Asked if he is afraid that Greece’s fate is intrinsically connected to the global economy, Varoufakis answered: “A bit. If I weren’t scared, I’d be awfully dangerous.” Varoufakis though is not afraid to clash with Germany and its austerity program that instead of pulling Greece out of the crisis, has driven the Greek economy to the ground, leaving one-third of Greeks in poverty. “We’ve lost everything,” he says. “So we can speak truth to power, and it’s about time we do.”

Greek Finance Ministry to Extend Settlement Scheme to Debts Expiring Dec. 31, 2014
The Greek finance ministry on Friday announced that a new measure for the settlement of overdue debts to the state will include debts whose due date expired on December 31, 2014. The ministry has also announced that the new settlement schemes will either totally abolish or substantially raise the current cap of 1.0 million euros in order for debts to be eligible for the 100-installment settlement scheme, as well as simplified eligibility procedures. In a further clarification, the finance ministry said that notes sent by the General Secretariat for Public Revenues to debtors came from the automated system, which automatically sends identical notes throughout the 100-installment period without needing any order to do so. Greece to Review Airport Privatization Deal
Greece plans to review a 1.2 billion euro deal for German airport operator Fraport to run 14 regional airports, State Minister Alekos Flabouraris said. The deal was part of the previous government’s privatization program. Fraport along with the Copelouzos Greek energy group would run regional airports in popular tourist destinations like Rhodes and Crete. “The deal has not been sealed. We said it will be halted and we will review it,” Mr. Flabouraris said on Mega television. “For us, airports are not a package to be sold, like the others did. Some of them can be run by the municipality, others by private individuals, we’ll see,” he added. The state minister also said that the new government will review privatization contracts that have been already signed. Fraport expected to close its agreement with the previous government in October.

This Skeleton Couple Has Been Locked In An Embrace For 6,000 Years
Talk about a lasting romance. This couple couldn’t keep their hands off each other -- for almost 6,000 years. The grave of two Neolithic skeletons locked in a tight embrace was discovered in a Greek cave in 2013, and now DNA testing has determined each skeleton's sex, revealing a man and woman, the Associated Press reported. The skeletons -- found lying in a fetal position, seemingly spooning each other -- are estimated to be around 5,800 years old. (Story continues below photo.) The remains of a man and woman in their early twenties, buried as they died nearly 6,000 years ago -- locked in a tight embrace in Diros, southern Greece. Anastassia Papathanassiou, a member of the excavation team that unearthed the grave, told the AP that the couple likely died holding each other. The grave sits near the Alepotrypa Cave, part of the Diros Cave complex in southern Greece. “Double burials in embrace are extremely rare,” the Greek Ministry of Culture said this week of the finding, according to Discovery News. “The skeletons of Diros represent one of the oldest, if not the oldest, found to this date.” Many questions remain as to the couple’s story, including the cause of their death and whether they were related. Papathanassiou told the AP that further DNA testing will be conducted on the remains.
