Macedonian Tomb Opens its Doors
A Macedonian tomb in Xanthi, Greece, opens its doors to the public tomorrow morning. The monument remains closed, as there is no permanent security guard on the spot, while those wishing to visit, have to contact the relevant Archaeological Ephorate to arrange for an appointment and tour. “The tomb is in very good condition. Anyone who wishes to visit, can call our service and arrange for the monument guard to open it for them and for an archaeologist to give them a tour,” said to “thrakitoday” website the archaeologist responsible for the site, Kyriaki Chatziprokopiou. She also stressed that “there are 6 graves of Macedonian type in Thrace but this specific one is the largest and the best preserved, the most elaborate tomb in relation to others who have been discovered.” In the context of actions for the public’s awareness on the work offered by the Archaeological Service, the Association of Greek Archaeologists will open the doors of this great Macedonian tomb to the public on Sunday morning at 11 am and will offer a guided tour, while informative material regarding the monument will be handed to visitors. “For the third consecutive year, the awareness week is dedicated to the promotion of the Archaeological Service’s work, which is little known to the general public,” said Chatziprokopiou. The Macedonian tomb was discovered in the 1950s and, according to archaeologists, it is placed chronologically in the period 200-150 BC. It has an internal road, while its vestibule chamber is covered with arches. It is made of marble cornerstones, the chambers’ and pre-chambers’ doors are monolithic, while the floors are covered with marble slabs. The pre-chamber has a width of 3.13 meters and length of 2.12 meters. The door to the burial chamber was closed with a large doorway. Excavations conducted in 1993, revealed some figurines, statuettes and ritual instruments in the greater tomb area, which probably originate from the sanctuary of Asclepius.

International Media On Scenarios of a SYRIZA Govt in Greece
International media flirt more and more with the scenario of opposition party SYRIZA being the next government in Greece, “forcing” in a way banks, economists and analysts to prepare reports and examine the positive or negative economic effects of such a development. In this context, Credit Suisse published a report entitled “Greece, don’t leave me this way.” Credit Suisse editors attempt to present a comprehensive analysis of developments in Greek politics and economy, following the political debate on the occasion of the vote of confidence and the market reaction to the attempt of Athens’ early to exit from the Memorandum. They estimate that SYRIZA will become government and will manage to reach a new agreement with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, however it states that it will not be able to form a government on its own but by joining forces with other political parties, such as “To Potami” and Democratic Left (DIMAR). Moreover, Credit Suisse estimates that SYRIZA will be driven to such an agreement since the belief that Greece may leave the euro and set the debt on its own is most probably a “fallacy”. However, Societe Generale supports that the first quarter of 2015 will be crucial for Greece, the Eurozone, as well as the common currency. Societe Generale seems more fond of the current government, since, according to them, it “has made some achievements,” while on the other hand “An electoral victory for Tsipras will reintroduce a disintegration risk for the Eurozone.” German newspaper “SĂĽddeutsche Zeitung” reported that the current coalition government may have won the vote of confidence by a majority vote but the task of gathering 180 votes for the election of President of the Hellenic Republic is still extremely difficult and leaves the possibility open for early elections.
Terrorist Paula Roupa Makes a “Comeback”
In a 13-page statement released last night, Paula Roupa, the partner of terrorist Nikos Maziotis, and one of the members of the Revolutionary Struggle guerrilla group, made a “comeback.” Through the approximately 7,500-word statement that was read at an event held in Athens, Greece, on “Armed Struggle, Revolutionary Movement and Social Revolution,” Roupa sent the message that Revolutionary Struggle “is alive,” insisting on armed action. At the beginning of the statement, Roupa sent a message of support to prisoner Maziotis by writing: “Nikos, I know you have got the power. We, as we have said at auditoriums, will simply change our struggle areas.” The statement made a brief reference to Antonis Stamboulos, which Roupa called an “anarchist comrade” and a relative brief reference to the announcement made by the Public Order Minister on planned attacks on entrepreneurs and businesses. This statement could be considered as a theoretical analysis for the armed struggle and the progress of the Revolutionary War from 2004 to 2009 and called on anarchists to join forces on major hits, however, it did not give any specific details on what those would be but rather mentioned that they would target the regime’s core. Finally, Roupa made another reference to the Revolutionary Struggle’s losses, such as that of Lambros Foundas, while regarding Maziotis’ arrest she stated that it was “a blow not only to Revolutionary Struggle but the subversive fight comprehensively.”

SYRIZA Still on the Lead Over New Democracy in New Poll
According to a new poll on voting intent, 23.7% of respondents said they would vote for SYRIZA over New Democracy’s 18.8%. To Potami came third with 6.1%, followed by the Greek Communist Party with 4.9%, Golden Dawn with 4.5% and junior ruling coalition member PASOK with 3.4%, same as Independent Greeks. Popular Orthodox Rally, which is not currently represented in Parliament, got 2%. Another 9.2% said they would vote for some other party, 17.7% said were undecided or did not want to respond and 5.2% said they will not vote. Asked whether they believed this Parliament would be able to select a new President of the Hellenic Republic – which requires a majority of 180 MPs – 58% of respondents said a majority would not be reached, while 33% said it would and another 9% polled “I don’t know/Will not answer.” Asked for choice of Prime Minister, 32% said Greece’s current PM Antonis Samaras is best suited for the job, as opposed to 18% for SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras. A whopping 36% said “none.” The poll was conducted from October 6 to 10. In Metron Analysis’ last poll (September 8-10) SYRIZA was leading with 2.6 percentage points. (source: ana-mpa)
Law on Overdue Tax and Social Security Debts Postponed
Legislative measures that will allow for a new restructuring of overdue tax and social security debts has been postponed until next week as Greek and Troika officials are still hammering out the details. However, this delay seems devastating in terms of tax collection for both tax registries and social security funds. The measure is an effort to recoup at least some revenue from citizens and businesses with overdue tax debt which is estimated to reach a stunning 90 billion euros. The new measure will reduce the fines and interest rates to be be paid and increase the number of installments to render tax bills more affordable. Data released by the General Secretariat of Public Revenue is quite shocking, revealing that arrears have been “inflated” by 1.4 billion euros in just one month, while data from IKA social security fund shows that in September alone, the number of its debtors has increased to 549,151 in total and by approximately 21,000 in just one month. Out of the 549,151, only 18,056 debtors are already included in some sort of settlement program. In order to stem this debt trend, IKA’s management has chosen a rather “aggressive” policy: In the first nine months of the year, it has proceeded to 4,959 valuables’ foreclosures, 796 real estate foreclosures and 667 auctions, while it has made clear that the treatment will be similar to all those who do not settle their debts in the future. Thousands of citizens have turned to the country’s Administrative Courts, which accumulate an incredible workload of such cases on a monthly basis. In total, 319,226 cases are still pending, regarding fines and additional taxes in dispute, 15,492 of which were added in just 3 months. Even the Council of State has approximately 5,400 pending cases, 2,376 of which are related to financial differences with the Finance Ministry that do not exceed 10,000 euros. All this data reinforce the view that apart from the need for a new debt arrangement, a new legislative framework for the settlement of “red loans” is required, since the rate of unserved debts is exponentially increasing every month. 2,813 bankruptcy cases are pending in the country’s first instance courts, 146 of which were filed in the last quarter of this year alone, while the courts of appeals have another similar 39 cases on hold.

Market Signals: A look at what has changed in financial markets in the last month
by Associated Press Here's what's been happening in markets this month by The Associated Press, Associated Press - 18 October 2014 09:02-04:00 What a difference a month makes. On Sept. 18, the U.S. stock market reached a record high after a mostly uneventful summer. Long-term interest rates headed higher, a sign that investors expected steady U.S. growth. A widely watched measure of volatility in the U.S. stock market was near its lowest level of the year, and European markets were heading higher after a nasty downturn over the summer. The price of crude oil was declining, but nothing like the sudden plunges that would come weeks later. Here is a snapshot of key market signals and what they've shown over the last month and year to date. S&P 500 INDEX It's been a bumpy ride for U.S. stocks in the last month, especially since Monday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index nearly went into "correction" on Wednesday, meaning a decline of 10 percent or more from a recent peak. The declines briefly wiped out the year-to-date gains for the index. One month: Down 5.7 percent. Year-to-date: Up 2.1 percent. BONDS The U.S. Treasury market had one of its biggest moves in recent memory on Wednesday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note dropped precipitously as prices on the notes surged. A rush to buy U.S. government debt, which is seen as extremely low-risk, can indicate investors are fearful of disruptions in other markets or expect the U.S. economy to slow down. In one morning the yield dropped from 2.20 percent to as low as 1.91 percent, a huge move that would normally take weeks. The magnitude and suddenness of the drop shocked investors, and left many puzzled over what caused it. By the end of the week trading had stabilized. Friday: 2.20 percent. One month ago: 2.62 percent. Beginning of the year: 2.97 percent. CRUDE OIL The price of crude oil has had some steep drops in recent weeks, and has been in more or less steady decline since hitting a peak of $107.26 a barrel in June. On Friday it closed at $82.75 a barrel, 23 percent below that peak. Ample global supplies, high production levels and expectations of slowing demand in China and in Europe as economic growth weakens have driven down the price of oil. While cheaper prices for oil and gas are good for drivers, airlines and many others, they mean trouble for energy company profits. One month: Down 12.2 percent. Year-to-date: Down 15.7 percent. EUROPE Troubling signs of a slowdown in Germany, Europe's biggest economy, have rattled investors in recent weeks. Also, Germany's resistance to using economic stimulus puts it at odds with the European Central Bank and its European neighbors. That contributed to a slide in European markets over the last month. The declines were even more pronounced in countries on the periphery of Europe, which have borne the brunt of the region's long-simmering government debt problems, such as Greece and Portugal. Greece was especially hard hit by fears that its government could collapse, jeopardizing its exit from bailout loan programs. Greece's long-term borrowing costs rose sharply, a signal that investors are more worried about its ability to pay its debts. Germany's DAX One month: Down 8.4 percent. Year-to-date: Down 7.3 percent. Portugal's PSI One month: Down 13.9 percent. Year-to-date: Down 23.1 percent. Greece's ATHEX One month: Down 17.7 percent. Year-to-date: Down 19.9 percent. Yield on Greece's 10-year bond Friday: 7.93 percent One month ago: 5.77 percent Beginning of the year: 8.14 percent. News Topics: Business, General news, Stock prices, Economy, Government securities, Stock indices and averages, Leading economic indicators, Government debt, Government finance, Government business and finance, Government and politics, Stock markets, Financial markets People, Places and Companies: Europe, Germany, Greece, Western Europe Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.
