For 74 years, Hermione Prigkou has carried out her duty with dedication and diligence, tending to the graves of Greek victims of the Second World War. Prigkou, from Himara in northern Greece, began taking care of the graves during the Second World War. Today, she still oversees the final resting places of six Greek soldiers who are entombed in the yard of her house. Following her meeting with the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias a few days ago, Greece’s Ministry of Defense honored Prigkou in a public ceremony. The ceremony was attended by the Minister and the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Dimitris Avramopoulos and Ioannis Lambropoulos, the General Secretary of Transparency and Human Rights George Sourlas, the Chief of the National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) Michael Kostarakos, the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Marshal Evangelos Tournas and the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Christos Manolas.
