Mass Tourist Influx to Greece in August

Recently published data on tourist arrivals to Greek airports is extremely encouraging. In August alone, approximately 8 million visitors entered Greece via airplanes. According to research on Greek tourism conducted by the Anna Euro Foundation, there has been a particularly large influx of visitors to Greece from the Emirates this year – up 78% from 2013. Many have reached the country via the refurbished Kalamata airport, the annual traffic of which is up 60% over last year. Aegean tended to be the airline of choice for tourists entering the country. The number of tourists from Italy and France nearly doubled compared to last year. Visitors from Germany and Britain increased by 18% and 13%, respectively. Traffic through Kalamata airport increased 67.2% in August 2014 over August 2013. Airports on Mykonos and Santorini recorded equivalent increases of 32.8% and 25.8%, respectively. Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens also recorded a higher increase this August compared to years past. Aegean Airlines sold 216,771 seats in August. The Spanish airline Vueling almost tripled (181.9%) its traffic to Greece this summer, while Ryanair nearly doubled its August profits on flights to Greece in 2014.
