Turkish Minority Party Wins EU Election Vote in Eastern Thrace

The Friendship, Equality and Peace (DEB) party representing the Turkish minority, which is adjacent to the Muslim Greek minority residing in eastern Thrace, northern Greece, has secured the first place for the European Parliament elections in the electoral districts of Rodopi and Ksanthi, while ranking third in the regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. DEB, which is endorsed by the Turkish Consulate General in Komotini, secured a 25.89 percent approval in Ksanthi, and a 41.68 rating in Rodopi, leaving New Democracy party behind with a 25 percent gap. In the whole regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, however, the minority party ranked third with 12.24 percent, following New Democracy’s victory in the region, and SYRIZA’s second place. Nationwide, the party secured a mere 42,620 votes (0.76 percent), thus failing to elect any MEPs.
