New Democracy Won Lion’s Share of Greek Diaspora EP Vote
Greece ’s leftist opposition party might have got biggest domestic share of the vote in the European Parliamentary elections, but Greek citizens resident around the European Union cast a different ballot. Conservative New Democracy won the diaspora vote, followed by the Coalition of Radical Left (SYRIZA), withhe Communist Party came third. According to data released by Greece’s Ministry of Interior, 10,095 Greek citizens resident in other EU member states voted, of 14,939 registered to do so, down substantially from 35,000 in 2009. Specifically, Greeks abroad cast their votes as follows: New Democracy 2,706 SYRIZA 1,909 KKE 1,768 The Olive Tree (Elia) 818 The River (To Potami) 794 The Golden Dawn 468 ANTARSYA 179 Independent Greeks 154 LAOS 96 EPAM 87 Greek residents in EU countries exercised their right to vote in 51 electoral departments in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Denmark, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Holland, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Czech Republic and Finland.
